Company of Heroes 2 to focus on "Shared humanity, heroism of ordinary soldiers"
GON: Why did Relic choose the Eastern Front for Company of Heroes 2, and what makes it an exciting battlefield for players?
Simon Watts: It’s an interesting choice, I think. One thing that was certainly a consideration for us was, “Where did most of the action happen in World War II?” and the obvious answer there is in the Eastern Front. Germany actually lost over 80 percent of its army during that campaign, making it – arguably – the most significant front in the war. I think, in the first Company of Heroes, we covered the Western Front extensively, providing the traditional view of World War II. By switching to the Eastern Front, we’re able to tell a different kind of story – one that isn’t told very often, one that shows the sheer brutality and tremendous human sacrifice that was a part of that conflict.

GON: How did you go about conveying that sense of brutality and sacrifice in-game?

Simon Watts: Some of the battles were truly horrific, with casualties numbering in the millions, so obviously portraying that – capturing the immense brutality of these conflicts – was a difficult task for us. One thing we’ve done in the game to try and convey that is in the way we tell the story. In Company of Heroes 2 we’re actually telling the narrative through the eyes of a war journalist, so not only do you get the perspective of the commanders and high level functionaries, but also the front line troops – so you can see what it’s like for the soldiers who had to face the harsh realities of war at the ground level.

GON: Will there just be two factions, or will we be able to play as the UK or the US, or others? Will minor players in the Axis be involved at all (Romania, Italy, etc.)?

Simon Watts: The single-player campaign is the story of the Red Army vs. the Axis invaders. It’s important to point out that the Axis forces that invaded Russia was very different from the Axis army on the Western Front. They had different vehicles, different equipment, different tactics. It’s a very different Axis army than the one in the first game. We’re not talking about multiplayer just yet so I can’t go into detail about the different factions beyond that, unfortunately.

GON: Did you have any qualms about making the Red Army the heroes of your campaign? Stalin wasn’t exactly a nice guy…

Simon Watts: He wasn’t! But I think with all of the World War II conflicts, when you get down to the front-line level, when you get down to the troops, there are some real stores of heroism that transcend ideology. So, sure, Stalin wasn’t a nice guy, and neither were a lot of the political commissars who served under him, but the actual frontline troops were just the same as the frontline troops from any other nation. It’s that shared humanity, the heroism of ordinary soldiers, that we want to be the focus of our campaign.

GON: Much of the game will be fought in the freezing cold. How will that be represented mechanically in the game?

Simon Watts: One thing we’ve done is make the snow dynamic. The movement of your infantry and vehicles is affected by how much snow there is on the ground, but you can use flamethrowers to melt it or explosives to clear a path. In addition to that, your troops and vehicles will also leave permanent tracks in the snow, which theenemy can use to find you – so that’s something you have to keep an eye on.

GON: What are the chief differences between the German and Russian armies in terms of composition and technology?

Simon Watts: The German army is very much a technology-based army. Conversely, the Russian army is more about brute force in numbers, and we’ve reflected that in the game. It wouldn’t make sense for you, as the Russians, to be going toe-to-toe with the Germans with exactly the same number of troops and exactly the same vehicles because the Russians were technologically inferior for most of the war – it was only right at the very end that they started to catch up with Germany in this respect. So you’ll definitely see large numbers of troops from a Russian perspective. There are also a few other features of the Russian army that we’ll be talking about a bit later, but again they’ll add to that sense of scale.

GON: Are the differences between the armies reflected tactically? As the Russians, will we be encouraged to adopt the (often suicidal) strategies actually employed at the time?

Simon Watts: Yes, you’ll find there a bunch of abilities that the Russians have that reflect the composition of their army. On top of that, Russian troops – although not as well-equipped as the Germans – will be cheaper to produce and replace. We’ve also looked at some of the more famous Russian military doctrines, such as Order 227 whereby retreat without authorisation was punishable by death. Again, we’re really trying to emphasise the brutality of the Eastern Front, and we want that to be reflected in the kinds of tactical decisions players have to make on a regular basis.

Company of Heroes 2 Reaches New Levels Of Realism On The Russian Front

Εικόνα

The brutal winter of 1941 played a key role in Germany's defeat in Russia and now THQ wants you to feel its bite.

Company of Heroes 2 will incorporate the new Essence Engine 3.0 and its ColdTech system which incorporates weather effects that have never been seen in a strategy game before. Cold can kill. Infantry units not stationed near fires or other heat sources will slowly freeze to death.

Snow behaves dynamically, accumulating on objects and slowing the movement of units. The game will also feature dynamic snowfall and blizzards that will cover tracks and make it even more dangerous for unattended soldiers.

The most impressive feature of the ColdTech system is that it turns ice into a dynamic part of the environment as well.

Players can halt enemy progress by breaking the ice and plunging enemies into the frigid Russian waters. The ice, like the snow, will accumulate over time if the weather conditions are right. All of these elements seem to indicate that THQ is trying to give gamers one of the most realistic WWII strategy simulations on the market.

Company Of Heroes 2 Event Impressions
Εικόνα
Earlier this week at an event held by THQ in a secret location, us here at Capsule Computers were given a glance and/or playthrough of some of their upcoming games. One of these games was the upcoming Company Of Heroes 2 strategy game from Relic Entertainment. Unfortunately, we were unable to actually go hands-on with the title as the game is still in Pre-Alpha and has yet to leave the workshop. However, we were shown a pretty decent developer commentary and some gameplay footage of some new features present in the series. I have to emphasise that what we were shown was a pre-alpha version of the game and everything that we’ve reported on will be subject to change based on the developers whim.

Company of Heroes 2 is set in Europe, over near Russia and features historically inspired battles and missions from the battles around the 30s/40s World War 2 era. Because of this setting, there is probably not going to be any continuity between this and previous games and as such should be appealing to both newcomers and veterans alike.

The primary element that was on display was the new snow-based gameplay elements which is based around the actual combat elements from the games historical setting. Basically in Company Of Heroes 2, players soldiers will be subject to the harsh conditions of perpetual snowfall and occasional snow storms. This means that players will now have a new element to manage on the battlefield aside from the usual tactics of battle. For instance, individual soldiers will need to keep warm by taking cover or by having a field engineer construct fire to build heat. If a unit fails to keep warm, he will succumb to the snow and die.
There are also other snow-based elements, such as the element where units will prefer to move across footpaths over deep snow. In the deep snow, units temperatures drop significantly and their movement and effectiveness are cut. Having this kind of element adds a certain tactical depth to the field that could be manipulated by the right player.

During the playthrough, we were shown a lake made of ice. What made this interesting is that your normal infantry units could mostly cross the lake safely, heavier units like tanks would deal damage to the ice and could eventually sink in. It was also shown that the heavier tanks would be more likely to fall into the ice than the lighter tanks.

Of course, the game wouldn’t be a sequel to the original hit without having similar gameplay elements to the ones presented in the original game. As someone who actually played the first game (albeit a long while ago), I can tell you that is incredibly similar to this latest offering. For instance, both have cover, both have squads, capturing points on a map in certain game-modes and etc. However there is a new addition to these that make this new game stick out and that addition is the new vaulting feature. Players squads will be able to vault over walls to quickly gain ground or to get to cover.
At the moment of writing, the game that we were shown wasn’t as visually impressive as the first game was when it was unveiled back in 2006. However I would like to note that this is still the Pre-Alpha version of the game and assets and the like have probably been borrowed for development purposes. I’m hoping that the game will look much better when it’s completed.

Overall Company Of Heroes 2 is shaping up to be an excellent looking title that strategy fans everywhere will enjoy. There are enough new changes to make fans of the classic want to return for more and because of it’s unique setting of Russia vs. Germany, new players won’t feel left out of the story.
