H Konami πατσάρει (επιτέλους;) τα Silent Hill

H Konami ανακοίνωσε ότι έρχονται patches στα Silent Hill Downpour και HD Collection ύστερα από τις φωνές των κατόχων για διάφορα προβληματάκια. Εισακούστηκαν λοιπόν.

"Καταλαβαίνουμε ότι κάποιοι χρήστες αντιμετωπίζουν κάποια προβλήματα και η ομάδα μας εργάζεται σκληρά για να διορθώσει τα frame rate drops, το audio-synching στο HD Collection και το πρόβλημα με το Auto-Save του Downpour" δήλωσε η εταιρία.

You know the old saying “it never rains but it pours” well here’s another one, “I don`t want to rain on your parade” because KONAMI I am about to do just that.

SILENT HILL DOWNPOUR developed by VATRA games is the eighth instalment of the SILENT HILL series, and most definitely the worst.

If you have played the other SILENT HILL games, then you know what a scary and innovative series it is, with a great atmosphere and some classic jumpy moments, and it introduced us to some of the most twisted and imaginative creatures to ever grace our screens, with a brilliant soundtrack by AKIRA YAMAOKA , it certainly has become a legend in its own lunch time, so what does KONAMI do? They throw everything out the window and start again!!!

SILENT HILL DOWNPOUR centres around a single character called MURPHY an escaped criminal (for a change he actually is guilty of his crimes for a change)

Here is the story in a nutshell, MURPHY is being transported to another prison after instigating a riot, when the bus crashes, he wakes up near to SILENT HILL and that’s when the story begins, as there is no option to skip the cut scenes, you will have no choice but to follow the story, which is overly complex for such a game and doesn`t make much sense at times.

Right so moving on, we get to the actual game play, SILENT HILL DOWNPOUR is a single player “survival horror” game with a few puzzles thrown in for good measure.

MURPHY moves from scene to scene picking up clues and beating up zombies , with a variety of objects ( the axe is the best one)there is no point in using the gun (if you can find one) as ammo is limited, and accuracy and effectiveness is mediocre, I found it easier (and more satisfying) to beat the demons to death.

Ok so this game isn`t all bad, there are moments of inspiration that occasionally shine through, but not enough to drag me into the game in an engaging way, the music by composer DANIEL LICHT is one of the better things about SILENT HILL DOWNPOUR, and it does help with the atmosphere, unfortunately it isn`t enough to make this a classic SILENT HILL production.

The controls aren`t the best I have seen, especially the fighting moves, which are pretty basic and repetitive, movement can be annoying as well with a number of glitches which slowed game play occasionally, there are moments when you are given choices as to whether to help a certain character or let them die (you can even choose to goad them) but to be honest no matter what choice you make, it still ends up the same way.

There is a puzzle element, which has been carried on from the SILENT HILL series, but this can be annoying at times because if you miss the combination /answer, then you have to either consult a walkthrough for the answer, or restart the level to find the clue you need.

As for the demons, well they are a bit thin on the ground, and not hard to dispatch (with a trusty axe) and there isn`t much of a feeling of apprehension and fear like the previous SILENT HILL games, some of the demons and scenes in those are genuinely scary, this game just felt lacking, OK it’s a new direction for the series , with VATRA games taking over the reins and attempting to inject something new into the genre, and it is very polished and well put together ,apart from the terrible control system and lack of action, it just doesn`t feel like a SILENT HILL game.

Silent Hill HD Collection Was Ported from Beta Source Code
The Silent Hill HD Collection should have been a love letter to fans, but instead, it turned out to be a technical disaster on many levels. Missing textures and crackling audio was just the tip of the iceberg. What went wrong?

Senior associate producer on the project, Tomm Hulett, has revealed to 1UP that Konami’s porting crew had to work off a beta build of the original source code. Apparently, Konami couldn’t find the source code belonging to the original gold master. Whoops.

“We got all the source code that Konami had on file — which it turns out wasn’t the final release version of the games,” noted Hulett.

He added, “So during debug we didn’t just have to deal with the expected ‘porting’ bugs, but also had to squash some bugs that the original team obviously removed prior to release, but we’d never seen before.”

On top of fixing bugs and other oddities in the pre-release code, the beta build wasn’t complete asset-wise, either. Hulett says Konami had to rip textures and sound straight from the original discs and import them in. While it’s an unfortunate situation, it’s still no excuse for the crippled state the HD Collection was released in, we think. Konami should have bit the bullet and issued a delay, or canned the project altogether.

Silent Hill HD Collection patch for PS3 arrives tomorrow
he long awaited Silent Hill HD Collection patch hits Playstation Network tomorrow. No word on the previously announced Xbox version of the patch, but I guess we’ll find out soon.

Announced on the Silent Hill Community forum, Konami producer Tomm Hulett announced that the patch will be available tomorrow and fix several issues. The list is as follows:

• Improved Framerate
• Voice Synch is greatly improved
• Missing sounds have been fixed
• Missing music has been addressed
• Fog density issues are resolved
• Other minor visual/audio improvements

I’m a bit surprised to see that the fog was considered a bug and addressed. No complaining here! As for the framerate, I’m glad to hear that is being fixed; I could not stand to play the PS3 version of the game due to the constant framerate changes. It bothered my eyes.

Audio bugs are abundant in the Silent Hill HD Collection for both consoles, so it’s good to see that problem fixed as well.

It’s safe to assume these same fixes will be coming to Xbox once it arrives on that platform. Until then, I look forward to seeing how much work went into fixing the game’s visuals with the PS3 update, tomorrow. Will Silent Hill 3 regain some of its missing fog/lighting effects? I hope so.

Silent Hill HD Collection Patch Released for PS3, Xbox 360 Patch Cancelled

Today, Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. announced that while a PlayStation 3 online title update for Silent Hill HD Collection has been deployed for download via PlayStation Network, plans for an XBOX 360 title update have been cancelled due to technical issues and resources.

Understanding the issues some users are experiencing, KONAMI issued a title update for Silent Hill HD Collection (PS3), which fixed frame rate issues as well as audio-synching and other reported issues. KONAMI apologizes to any players who are continuing to experience these issues on the XBOX 360.
