Borderlands 2′s Varkids get nastier as you fight them
Borderlands 2′s enemy creatures don’t just come in a variety of increasingly powerful forms – they’ll grow bigger and meaner in front of your eyes.
The image below, harvested from the Borderlands Facebook page, shows off how one kind of enemy, the Varkid, will form cocoons in order to spawn nastier versions of itself. This may put you in mind of the original Borderlands, where you’d be merrily taking pot shots at skag whelps and a badass skag would lunge out of a pipe and bite your face off, only slightly more gross.

Borderlands 2 - on the verge of greatness
Massive hands-on look at the guns, characters, plot and world
Borderlands was a surprise smash hit, but things could have been very different. Dropping the first game's original gritty photorealism for the now-iconic cel-shaded style mere months before release was a move that most studios would have thought suicidal. Three years and six million copies later, it's impossible to imagine Borderlands without it.
Coming together late in a traumatic development process, the first game benefited from luck that the sequel doesn't seem to need. Returning to Pandora for a second adventure, Gearbox radiates a confidence that simply wasn't present the first time around. For a series defined so much by style, a big part of the process of refining this formula was expanding Pandora without losing the tone.

"If you're an artist and I ask you to draw me a wasteland, it's natural to draw a desert," explains senior producer Sean Reardon. "It was important for us to be thinking about the feeling of a wasteland and what it means to be in one, but not to trap ourselves in 'yet another brown game'. Each environment needed to be legitimate and beautiful."
The expanded colour palette and variety of styles is the first thing you'll notice about Borderlands 2, but art director Jeramy Cooke argues that it's the impact this has on the game that really matters. "The art style and the story all come together, which allows us to be free to explore stuff in a way that a lot of titles don't. If I do a mechanic about throwing away my guns - that won't make sense in the 'traditional shooter' universe."
Changing the art for the sake of tone has since become the core focus of the entire design of Borderlands 2. "It's fun to come into an established franchise like Borderlands, because it was clear that it was a game about having fun," admits Borderlands 2 writer Anthony Burch. "It's not a game about intense, emotional, slow-motion tragedy.
The most complex question we ask is: what happens when you shoot a psycho in the face with a shotgun that fires lightning? This lets us do things in the story that you might have never seen before. We have a quest that intentionally lasts 15 seconds because it's different, funny and it changes the pace."
We've seen what this means in practice, and we can't deny the appeal. One quest is entirely Top Gun-themed - asking you to burn a volleyball net to avenge a spurned team member. A side objective in another quest rewards you for being a cinematic badass: walk away from an explosion without looking back, and your enemies will freak the hell out. Burch argues that Borderlands 2 is in a unique position to be silly: "If we did a serious story about getting a kidnapped family member back from terrorists we wouldn't have that freedom."

Despite ramping up the elements that feel wilfully weird, Gearbox still wants to keep a leash on the tone of the humour. "I wouldn't say it was funny or 'zany' - it's more of a dark humour," says Reardon. "We're inspired by movies like Total Recall or Robocop or Starship Troopers."
Wherever Gearbox takes Borderlands next, some things will always remain the same. "Shooting things is compelling and primal," admits Cooke. "That experience of just going forward and blowing stuff up is in Gearbox's DNA."
Playing the numbers game
Loot and shoot might have been the addictive glue that held the original together, but Gearbox didn't do a fantastic job of squeezing the best out of the RPG genre. Punchy guns and smoother aiming make pulling the trigger more satisfying than ever, but this isn't the improvement that has us vibrating with excitement.

New Borderlands 2 Details, and why this game is going to rock

I cannot wait for this game. I’m literally counting down the days on a calender. And it’s this excitement that has driven me to pulling up some new details for the masses.
But we will get around to that in a moment, in the time being I’m just going to fill you in on a few things that is going to make this game a smash hit. So here are some shots from Pax for your consideration.
First of all, lets talk about the size and scope of this game. In terms of weaponry that the player can aquire, the first game offered somewhere in the region of 17,750,000 guns. In Borderlands 2 the developers have promised us, and i quote “870 Gajillion More Guns…with personality.” A more reasonable would be this. Thus far we have been told that the game is going to be larger than its predecessor by a magnitude of 3-4. That equates to somewhere in the region of 710.000.000 weapons. That’s a lot of fire power.

An environmental kill in the level Lynchwood
The second point of interest is in the screenshot above, in a level that I can confirm is called “Lynchwood”, if we pay close attention to the lefthand side of the screen, it would appear that a “Raider” is being killed, rather brutally I might add, by a freight train. The latest rendition of the game seems to incorporate environmental kills outside of “shoot the red barrel”. Although not a confirmed feature its safe to assume that this screenshot is all the confirmation you need.
Interest number 3, and this is one I’m thoroughly looking forward to playing with. This area is called “fridge” and it’s easy to see why, but if we look into the background we can clearly see a sentry turret mowing down a group of three (as yet) unnamed enemies. The sentry is deployed by one of the games new characters, so I reached out to 2k games for some deets and here are the facts. We can also see the Siren class in action with her equally awesome abilities, which are also detailed below.
Axton / Commando class – Sabre Turret – Axton can deploy a turret which can be upgraded with many gun and missile attachments or augmentations. Some of these upgrades can grant the turret the ability to teleport far distances or create nuclear explosions!
Maya / Siren class – Phaselock – Maya can lift and lock enemies in place where they sit helplessly out of battle and prone to damage. Phaselock can take many forms including healing party members, creating massive damage to enemies or for crowd controlling numerous enemies.

The Terramorphous seems to dwarf all the previous Boss Battles from Borderlands 1.
In this screenshot we get a glance at the massive new enemy, who goe by the name of “Terramorphous”. Given the size of this beastie, I think we can get a rough idea of the size of some enemies we are likely to encounter. Those of you who are a little more attentive than most will have no doubt noticed that the characters are all wearing different costumes than what we have seen thus far, hip-hip-hooray for customisation. Take note of the use of grenades as well, it looks as though Axton is primed to throw it into Terramorphous’ gaping mouth.
All these things combine to path the way for a fantastic sounding game, one, that if it plays its cards right (which I’m fairly sure it has) will be a massive unit shifting force to be reckoned with, and lets not forget that the special editions add some more funk to the game, so get out there, and pre-order it while you still can, I’d hate to visit Pandora without you.
Oh and before I go here’s a picture for you that details the Assassins little assassination trick.
Zer0 / Assassin class - Deception – Zer0 can vanish into stealth, do massive critical hit damage and distract his enemies with a decoy. While in Deception, Zer0 can also see critical weak points on enemies or assassinate enemies with fast attacking melee strikes

CYPHER - Cyberpunk Text Adventure
Four pieces of campaign DLC will add to your Borderlands 2 experience after the game’s release on September 18. It should be noted that Gearbox announced that these DLCs will extend the campaign. Meaning the story will progress in these missions apparently further beyond the ending of the base game.
This information came out of a PAX Prime panel where the studio noted each piece of DLC would cost $10 / 800 Microsoft Points. A season pass for all of it would be $30.
CEO Randy Pitchford noted that these DLC’s will be on par with the scope of something like Borderlands 1′s General Knoxx DLC . These DLC packs are in addition to the already announced “Mechromancer DLC pack” which will arrive on 16th of October. No further details have been released up till this point.
