In an interview with GamesIndustry, Smith name-dropped or acknowledged a small cluster of legendary first-person games: Deus Ex, Thief, Far Cry 2 and BioShock, as well as spiritual precursor System Shock and stable mate Ultima Underworld.
“They are not first-person shooters; they are first-person games with depth. First-person action games are very immersive; they are from your perspective and they mix simulation, stealth and storytelling,” Smith said.
“It is all about player freedom. We never want to make a game that is a linear canyon where you start here in this canyon, you can’t go left or right. You see lots of pretty scenery, but you always arrive at the end. We never want to make that game. We want to make a game where you can go behind the building, go on the roof, swim in the river and come in through the sewer drain and come up with a fish.”
Smith said he feels the industry is strengthened by diversity and that all styles of game have their place, but doesn’t seem personally keen on structured shooters.
“We like games that are authored in such a way that they are systems. They aren’t just a shooting gallery with scripted pop-ups for the player,” he said.
“That’s really our goal with Dishonored; to empower the player so the player can play creatively. It requires more on the part of the player; these games don’t play themselves.”

Bethesda has announced the voice cast for Dishonored, which includes Susan Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Carrie Fisher, John Slattery, Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Madsen, and Lena Headey.

Sarandon makes her videogame debut as the former aristocrat, Granny Rags, Brad Dourif takes on the role of the inventor Piero, Carrie Fisher will be broadcasting government propaganda over loudspeakers throughout the city of Dunwall, and John Slattery plays Admiral Havelock, a Loyalist who helps Corvo on his quest.
Michael Madsen takes on the role of Daud, a mysterious assassin, Chloë Grace Moretz portrays Young Lady Emily, and Lena Headey plays her caretaker, Calista.
Composer Daniel Licht (Dexter) has created the game’s original score.
Dishonored is set for release in North American on October 9,and throughout Europe on October 12 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Dishonored dev: ‘We never want you to feel too powerful’
Dishonored’s masked hero Corvo comes packing a ton of special powers and equipment. In a game where stealth and caution are rewarded, you may thing that these skills make guards easy to kill or bypass.
Think again, says Arkane.

Speaking with Joystiq, Arkane’s co-creative director Raphael Colantonio explained, “It was a hard paradox for us to get right in the game design, because we wanted to give you very strong powers, to make you really a badass, but at the same time we didn’t want the game to be too easy.”
“So it took awhile to get it right” Colantonio added, “and some of it is just obvious tuning. Every power has a duration, cost of mana, and some other tunable properties. So even if your power is incredibly strong, you can mitigate it by saying ‘Well, it only lasts three seconds.’”
Arkane’s Ricardo Bare added, “We’re always in a discussion about where the line is. Should we move it back a little bit toward constraining the player, or should we go ahead and let the player do this? And as much as possible we try to say ‘yes’ to the player and enable the cool combinations and powers that they put together.”
