Borderlands 2 Exclusive Preview
Borderlands 2 is Gearbox Software‘s follow up game to their original title that got the world addicted to its 87 bazillion gun looting and shooting throughout the world of Pandora. Borderlands 2 expands on this theory by promising 870 gazillion guns in the game this time around, and this idea of going big with the sequel manages to seep into nearly every aspect of the title. You’ll find more missions to tackle, bigger and nastier bosses than ever before, more NPCs with whom you can interact including many memorable characters from the last game and a massive new storyline you’ll follow on your journey through the new areas of Pandora. We got a chance to check this game out at San Diego Comic-Con, and needless to say, the game blew us away.

Pandora is back in Borderlands 2, but this time around you’ll control a new group of vault hunters who are fighting against the intelligent but maniacal Handsome Jack, owner of the Hyperion Corporation. It’s now 5 years after the events of the original Borderlands, and this new villain has claimed to be the person who opened the Vault and saved Pandora and is now trying to rid the world of bandits a.k.a. anyone who doesn’t join his cause and fall in line. The villainous tyrant gets his hands on the game’s protagonists early on in the game and leaves them stranded in the middle of a Tundra wasteland of Pandora. As it turns out, Handsome Jack is searching for some special loot of his own in the form of a powerful and colossal beast know as The Warrior. It will be up to this new group of vault hunters to stop The Warrior, take revenge on Handsome Jack and save the world of Pandora from the corrupt Hyperion corporation.
The group manages to stay alive long enough to reach one of the first massive towns in the game called Sanctuary. The town which was briefly mentioned in the original game finally makes an appearance here, and for some time, it will serve as the central location where players can interact with NPCs, receive missions, play mini-games, visit various shops and meet returning characters such as Lilith, Dr. Zed, Scooter and your faithful companion and last of his kind in existence Claptrap. Much like its name, the town has become a sanctuary for those who would oppose Handsome Jack, so you’ll find anyone from thugs and bandits to common shop owners and citizens in Sanctuary. You’ll find many things to do in the city, and you’ll receive many more interesting missions in Borderlands 2 such as some of Claptrap’s funny ideas to rounding up a victim for a psychopathic, murdering 13 years old’s tea party.

Borderlands developer wonders why the game hasn't been cloned Exclusive
"We're in an industry where people do nothing but steal from each other," says Gearbox Studios president Randy Pitchford, whose Borderlands 2 comes out this fall.

When Borderlands came out, many gamers and critics praised its blend of RPG quest/loot mechanics and polished shooter gameplay. It's a formula the developer feels is ripe for the taking.

"I'm actually astonished that we're about to launch a sequel and no one's stole it from us," says Pitchford. "The formula's right there. No one's stolen it yet. That's weird."

"Not that I want anyone to steal it, or I'm challenging people to steal it," he adds.

One of the biggest challenges of promoting the first game in the series, he says, was talking about it without giving away the secret of its gameplay success, says Pitchford.

"When talking about Borderlands 1, it was really confusing, because on one hand we gotta scream from the highest mountain to get attention because it's a new IP. On the other hand, it's like, 'Shit, we don't want to tell people our secret because then they're all gonna copy it because it's so good.'"

The full interview with Pitchford, in which he discusses in detail what it takes to make the right decisions and thrive as an independent triple-A studio in 2012, is live now on Gamasutra.

Borderlands 2 Lead AI Programmer Jasper Foreman Talks Hulking out with Goliath & Badass Tokens
Recently, we had the chance to speak with Jasper Foreman, the Lead AI Programmer at Gearbox Software on Borderlands 2.
In this interview, Foreman discusses the smarter, more dynamic AI that gamers can expect in Borderlands 2. For instance, two enemies have a slight romance that can cause big trouble for players. The mutated midgets we saw in the first game, will now interact with one of Jasper’s favorite new enemies, the Goliath.

Foreman told us: “If a Goliath and a midget get in close contact with each other – they kind of like each other – the midget will hop on his back and be an even more powerful enemy.”

Regarding gameplay, Foreman warns us that we should expect tougher challenges. A battle with a Goliath can quickly turn into a mini-boss battle depending on how you attack it. “He Hulks out,” Foreman says.

“The middle of combat changes. which makes the regular and side missions good. The whole system we created to facilitate that allowed us to make really interesting boss battles as well. Pretty much every boss battle has its own unique attack, way of attacking and approach.” Gamers will also be able to fight bosses over-and-over to get better loot.
EDITOR’S PICK: Borderlands 2 Takes Loot Hoarding & Visual Design to the Nth Level

Foreman further elaborates on the Badass Token system, an upgrade to the RPG leveling gamers loved in the first Borderlands. He also lets us know the biggest pitfalls he sees in other shooters and how Borderlands 2 will stand out from the crowd this Fall.

No cuts necessary for Borderlands 2
Over-the-top role-playing shooter Borderlands 2 has escaped the scalpel of censorship unscathed.

Despite its cartoony but brutal abundance of what developer Gearbox Software calls "bloody chunks of awesomeness", the game will be released in all territories with no cuts made.

That includes stricter markets such as Australia and Germany, where the 2009 original was modified slightly to reduce the amount of cel-shaded blood on screen.

"We're happy to announce that Borderlands 2 will be uncut all over the world," Gearbox posted on its official blog.

"Some fans will remember that the first Borderlands game was a bit toned down in certain territories compared to the rest of the world. No longer!

"Do you live in Germany? Australia? Bandits will be just as likely to explode into bloody chunks of awesomeness as they will be in Canada or England (which is to say: very likely)."

That said, Gearbox has now added a new Gore Toggle option, allowing gamers to tone down the cartoony violence if they so choose.

Borderlands will be released for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on September 21st.

Ρεκόρ προπαραγγελιών για το Borderlands 2
Οι προπαραγγελίες του Borderlands 2 έχει ξεπεράσει κάθε άλλο τίτλο στην ιστορία της Take Two, με μοναδικές εξαιρέσεις τα GTA IV και GTA: San Andreas.

Borderlands 2 is “about 50-60% bigger” than original
Borderlands 2 is bigger and better than the first of Gearbox’s shooter RPGs, and here’s an arbitrary numerical quantification of that.

Εικόνα

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it was about 50-60% bigger [than Borderlands 1],” Gearbox VP Steve Gibson said in the latest issue of Games Master, via CVG.

But that’s not all.

“It’s also so much denser. Heck, just the city of Sanctuary, something like that couldn’t exist in the first game. Our technology has evolved a lot to enable us to do that now,” he added.

This is at least the second time Gibson has sought to put numbers on just how large the sequel is; he estimates Borderlands 2′s campaign is 58 hours long.

Borderlands 2 arrives on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in September.

Everything We Know About Borderlands 2

Εικόνα

We’re just about a month away from Gearbox’s massive Borderlands 2, and now would be a good time to start clearing your calendar for the week of September 18. If its predecessor is any indication, we’re in for a skag-shooting, loot-grabbing co-op adventure that can easily result in 100+ hour playtimes. Almost one year ago, we revealed the game’s existence on our September cover. Since then, we’ve talked to Randy Pitchford about the game, detailed Pandora’s variety of weapon manufacturers, shown off concept art, detailed the origins of the series, and played it firsthand at PAX East and E3. You’d think we’d be experiencing Borderlands 2 overload at this point, but we’re still chomping at the bit for its impending release. To get you up to speed, we’ve put together a primer for this bigger and better sequel.

Εικόνα

Axton (Soldier Class)

Special Ability: Scorpio Turret 2.0

Taking over Roland’s class from the first game, the soldier Axton inherits the Scorpio turret as his special ability. Depending on whether you choose the Guerrilla, Gunpowder, or Survival skill trees, you can alter it in numerous ways. You can add extra guns to the turret, allow it to be teleported rather than thrown, and enable it to stick to walls and ceilings. If you’re looking for even more firepower, you can eventually gain access to a second turret that can be deployed along with the first. We expect Axton to be an extremely helpful component for teams, as his versatile turret(s) distract enemies and simultaneously damage them.

Εικόνα

Maya (Siren Class)

Special Ability: Phaselock

While Axton’s ability is similar to Roland’s from the first game, Maya’s is considerably different than Lilith’s. Whereas the latter darted around Pandora with her Phasewalk ability, Maya's skill is called Phaselock. On its own, this ability locks enemies in a floating bubble that prevents them from attacking. If you’re looking to make it a more useful tool, you’ll want to travel down the Harmony, Motion, and Cataclysm skill trees. By spending skill points on the ability, you can eventually make it pull enemies towards you, explode upon expiration, slam foes to the ground, or cause them to change allegiance and fight for you. We can just imagine how much trouble an enemy will be in if they’re Phaselocked while one (or two) of Axton’s turrets are currently on the battlefield.

Εικόνα

Salvador (Gunzerker Class)

Special Ability: Gunzerking

Our September 2011 cover boy isn’t one for subtlety. His Gunzerker special ability allows him to dual wield any weapons in his inventory and go into a rage that would make Rambo blush. If you feel like getting especially uncouth with the scum of Pandora, you can invest in the “Come at me, Bro!” skill. Once he’s equipped with it, he begins his rampage by flipping his enemies dual middle-fingers, sending them into a rage. Their anger won’t get them far, however, as Salvadore will have full health and boosted defenses while this ability is running. If you want to cause even more carnage, you can increase the ability’s duration, reduce its cooldown, or allow it to be used while you're downed. This class won’t be for fans of sniping or cautious defense, as the large majority of his upgrades focus on pure firepower.

Εικόνα

Zer0 (Assassin Class)

Special Ability: Deception

Considering Zer0 is a sweet robot ninja assassin, we’re expecting to see plenty of Borderlands fans picking him right out of the gate. Luckily, he’s got plenty of substance to back up his bad-ass look. His Deception skill allows him to disappear, leaving enemies distracted by a hologram. While they’re wasting their time going after his doppleganger, Zer0 can resurface in an ideal sniping spot or move in close for some deadly melee attacks. Upgrades allow his decoy to explode when it expires, grant extra melee damage for some up-close stealthy kills, or increase the odds of a critical hit when attacking from the sides or back. With his mix of long-range accuracy and deadly melee attacks, this assassin is one of the most unique Borderlands classes we’ve seen.

Εικόνα

Handsome Jack

Borderlands 2’s new antagonist has assumed control of the Hyperion corporation, taken credit for the vault hunters’ work in the first game, and erected statues of himself across Pandora. His menacing orbital base is omnipresent, and capable of beaming enemies down to the planet’s surface. Considering his face appears to be attached to his head via metal hinges, we wonder if his true appearance is as handsome as his name implies.

Εικόνα

Claptrap

After the events of Claptrap’s New Robot Revolution, Handsome Jack ordered a genocide of the lovable machine’s kind. We got our first glimpse of him in Borderlands 2 during our E3 demo, which saw Claptrap ordering the playable characters around. Our little buddy views himself as the hero this time around, and the players as his sidekicks. While communicating with us over the intercom, Claptrap led us on a quest to destroy several of Handsome Jack’s statues. Starting a revolution with petty vandalism may not be the most effective way to bring down a dictator, but the player classes are certainly packing enough firepower to handle themselves when the real battles go down.

Εικόνα

Vault Hunters

Fans of the original four vault hunters shouldn’t fret, as they’ll all be a part of the sequel. While they won’t be playable, Gearbox plans to explore their personalities a bit more this time around. On our cover trip, the team explained that they didn’t want the vault hunters to speak too much so that players could immerse themselves in their characters as much as possible. Now that these old favorites are just along for the ride, we’ll be hearing plenty more from them. In our playable demos, we’ve led an assault to free Roland from Constructors and gone on a search for Mordecai’s missing hawk Bloodwing. Lilith and Brick are also back, although we’ve yet to see what role they’ll be playing in the story.

Εικόνα

Leveling Up

If you thought the first Borderlands offered a wide variety of ways to build your character, you haven’t seen anything yet. In addition to the millions of guns, you’re now able to customize your character in more ways than ever before. Take a look at the image above. As you’re assigning skill points to the Gunzerker’s skill tree, you’ll have 32 abilities and perks to choose between. Compare that to the Berserker from the first game, which featured 21 entries on the skill tree. There’s also a new way you can personalize your class that wasn’t in the original...

Εικόνα

Character Customization

At PAX East, Gearbox announced that it would be introducing a brand new form of loot in Borderlands 2. On top of tons of weapons, shields, and relics, players can collect new gear, costume pieces, and custom heads for their characters. Completing missions and challenges rewards players with these new wardrobe accessories, which are purely cosmetic. Owners of the original Borderlands will be gifted an exclusive head and skin if a save file is present on their console.

Εικόνα

DLC

New outfits weren't the only Borderlands 2 announcement at PAX East, as Gearbox also teased their first bit of DLC for the game. A new class known as the Mechromancer will become available at an unspecified point after the game's release, and is free for pre-order customers (others have to buy the class separately). Little is known about her at this time outside of the concept art above and the fact that she controls a large robot known as D374-TP (Deathtrap).

Εικόνα
