Wii U Will Continue To Use Friend Codes
Nintendo's Friend Codes will continue to be a thing when the Wii U console launches later in 2012, but Nintendo of America bossman Reggie Fils-Aime insists that users will find the new system much easier to work with. While he wouldn't lay out any specific details for the new framework in his E3 2012 chat with Kotaku, he did confirm that the Wii U won't use "the existing friend code system."

"You will be able to identify people as friends and have a certain level of interaction vs. a different level of interaction for the more general population," he said. "The method by which you identify someone as a friend is a lot simpler than what's happening today with Friend Codes."

Fils-Aime also touched on a number of other topics during the chat. He re-confirmed what we already knew about the Wii U's lack of built-in hard drive, pointing to the on-board USB input ports for those who wish to add more storage. He also offered some explanation as to why the Wii U GamePad's touch screen won't support multitouch.

"When we went through the building of this and, given some of the functionality, we thought that single-touch was a more appropriate option, especially when you've got other button configurations," he explained. "Certainly there's a cost to it. Again, we envision this as a controller that you're putting in your hands and you're doing a two-screen experience. The concept of putting it in your lap to do multi-touch for us just feels unwieldy."

Having more features for developers to work with never hurts, but you can see the sense in what Fils-Aime is saying here. Multitouch is technically possible, sure, but is it really worth adding to the cost of what is already likely to be an expensive (and somewhat necessary) peripheral?

Iwata – There are no “technical restrictions” to producing free-to-play games on Wii U

“With respect to the Wii U system, when we began working on it, one of our goals was to have a variety of purchase options and additional e-commerce options available at its launch. Because of that, we have prepared a Digital Rights Management system. We have designed the system from a technical standpoint to allow developers to freely take advantage of things like free-to-play and micro transactions.”

“We’ve planned to make it possible for people to release their games as either an optical disc or as digital content. So publishers would be able to choose from both of those options.”

Iwata said the the firm is currently in discussions with the publishers on this area, and should third-parties find it “reasonable,” games in the digital format will be available on Wii U at launch as the console lacks “technical restrictions.”

“I do think that we can improve profitability because with digital goods you avoid things like the cost of goods for media. You do not have the cost of shipping physical goods and you also can hold down inventory risks.”

However, Iwata said Nintendo is not considering developing a first-party a free-to-play game “if the game itself is not suitable in that fashion,” such as the firm’s Mario offerings.

“I have no intention to deny every possibility of free-to-play,” he said.

Iwata: Xbox Live and PSN are too far developed for Nintendo to catch up

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata believes that the numerous years Sony and Microsoft have spent developing their online platforms has left Nintendo behind and that rushing to "overcome or catch up" to them wouldn't be a smart strategy.

Το πήρε απόφαση δηλαδή ότι αντίστοιχη online υπηρεσία με αυτές του XBL και του PSN θα έρθει το 2020?

ε καλα κατι μας ειπε. Απο το gc το σνομπαρε πολυ το ονλαιν η νιντεντο. Αντιθετα sοny/ms εχουν ηδη μια δεκαετια που ασχολουνται σοβαρα με το θεμα. Θα ηταν καλο η νιντεντο να αναθεσει το χτισιμο του δικτυου της σε καμια εταιρεια που τα ξερει τα κολπα, αντι να ξαναανακαλυπτει τον τροχο για να αποφυγει ασταθειες.

H nintendo τις τελευταιες μερες παραδεχθηκε οτι :

1. Εχει μηνει πισω στο online . Δυσκολα θα τους φτασει λογο ελλειψης εμπειριας .
2. Δεν τα πηγαν καλα στην Ε3 και φετος .
3. Οτι τα παιχνιδια αρχικα τουλαχιστον θα τρεχουν στα 720p . Αρα και εκει ελλειψη εμπειριας .
( Δεν νομιζω να ειναι τοσο δυσκολο ενα 2d mario να τρεχει στα 1080p στα 60 fps με αυτο το μηχανημα )

Wii vs 360 and PS3 won't happen again, says Iwata

Nintendo's CEO Satoru Iwata doesn't feel threatened by Sony and Microsoft's future consoles possibly outclassing Wii U in terms of power -- and he doesn't believe devs will skip the system with their multiplatform games again.

During the current console generation, many developers elected not to bring their multiplatform games (e.g. Grand Theft Auto series) to Nintendo's system, partly due to the disparity in performance between the Wii versus Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The company expected Wii's motion controls to be more attractive to developers and consumers than high-definition visuals, but Iwata now admits that it lost the support of third-party studios when they focused on multiplatform titles.

However, he doesn't anticipate that happening with Wii U, which supports HD visuals, and the next generation of consoles. Iwata argues that, given the graphics already possible with current hardware, it doesn't make sense for platform holders to just max the specs on their systems.

"My impression is that the things that happened with Wii v 360 or Wii v PS3 won't happen again," said Iwata in an interview with The Telegraph. "If they decide to increase the spec numbers, will the consumers be able to realize the difference enough so that they can understand it's much superior to today's machine?"

The CEO doesn't think that's what developers want either: "If they beef up the processing power, that simply means much more work for software developers to take advantage of those spec numbers. So I have to ask the question if that type of differentiation really makes sense."

Iwata also pointed out that third-party publishers are already starting to bring franchises that were previously only for Xbox 360 and PS3 (in terms of home consoles) to Wii U, such as Electronic Arts' Mass Effect and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed.

"In the case of the Wii U, we have decided to make it so that it is capable of doing whatever the other two consoles can do, so games are easily portable," he added.
