Watch Dogs is being built on a brand new engine
Watch Dogs is being built on a brand new engine developed internally at Ubisoft, the game's producer has revealed.

"We're building a new IP," producer Dominic Guay told VG247.

"For us, there's three ingredients that are required to achieve that. That's what we did with Splinter Cell in Montreal; that's what we did with Assassin's Creed.

"The first thing is you need a talented team. We got that. We need time. We've had that; we've been working on this for a good two years and we're not shipping this year for sure. So we have a lot of time where we're able to put a lot of details in the game.

"The third thing you need is awesome tech, a great engine. Because when you build a new IP you want to bring in new experiences. To create a new type of experience your designers need new tools, a new engine, and we did just that.

"We have a very strong engineering team," Guay continued, "and we built the new engine to give the designers new abilities [and] new things that they could do.

"That's how we could have so much detail and so much density in our Chicago. We're going to be supporting multiple platforms when we come out."

This year's Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed III, is being built on a new version of Ubisoft's existing Anvil engine, used in previous Assassin's Creed titles.

But Guay's choice of words suggests that Watch Dogs could be being developed on an entirely new engine altogether, adding credence to those next-gen rumours.

Could a next-gen Assassin's Creed be in development on Watch Dogs' engine, too?

Ubisoft has yet to announce a release date for Watch Dogs, but Guay says that the game will "not [be] shipping this year for sure."

Watch Dogs gets official 2013 release date
Watch Dogs Twitter channel confirms 2013 launch for hi-tech assassin game.

Watch Dogs will release in 2013, Ubisoft has confirmed.

The publisher tweeted the news via the game's official Twitter channel earlier this week.

Up until now, Ubisoft had been fairly vague on the subject of a release date, saying that the the game will "not [be] shipping this year for sure".

Watch Dogs was announced during Ubisoft's E3 press conference earlier this week.

According to our spies on the ground, the game has already been nominated for multiple 'Best Game of E3' awards.

Conspiracy time: Is Watch Dogs actually Assassin's Creed 4?
Ubisoft's Watch Dogs took E3 by storm. It was one of only a handful of new IPs at the show - or was it? Rumours are buzzing online that 'Watch Dogs' is actually a codename, and that the game is, in fact, a modern day Assassin's Creed sequel. Madness? Maybe, but it's an intriguing idea.

Why Watch Dogs COULD be an Assassin's Creed game

- It's a game about assassinating people.

- The 'Ubisoft Presents' title at the start of the demo is very reminiscent of the AC games.

- When the hero picks up info using his phone at 1.32, it's the exact same visual device they use for blending in Assassin's Creed 3

- The Animus evolves every game, and so much of Watch Dogs looks 'in Animus'. Even the mini-map looks similar.

- Joseph DeMarco presents 'Dot Connexion' is written on the theatre. Is this a tease, inviting us to guess how the game is connected to other things? Or is it just a reinforcement of the core gameplay mechanic? (Everything is connected, so you can hack it all etc)

- He does look like a modern day Assassin. His hat is his hood, his phone is his wrist-blade.

- At 3.02. Look at the wall on the right. Looks like memory sequences from AC.

- The end line says 'Everything is connected. Connection is power'.

Why Watch Dogs definitely ISN'T an Assassin's Creed game

- Ubisoft like to share tech and ideas (Splinter Cell uses Assassin's Creed climbing animations, Ghost Recon uses large text floating in the sky like Splinter Cell Conviction etc). Everything in Watch Dogs is most likely Ubisoft sharing their ideas and tech.

- Watch Dogs already has a load of buzz. Why have one exciting brand when you can have two?

So, what do you think? Is there any truth to this theory, or is it just another insane internet rumour? Are we clutching at straws? We'd love to hear your ideas in the comments below.
