Xbox 360 closes in on Wii's UK sales record
The world’s eyes may be on PlayStation this month, but it is Xbox that is on the cusp of becoming the UK’s No.1 games console.

Xbox 360 has surpassed 8m UK sales and will overtake Wii in a matter of weeks.

A major push from a revamped SCEE team has seen an upturn in PS3’s performance, but it’s Xbox that has maintained market leadership. And now the platform holder is adding new faces to its team to ensure it stays there.

“Ten years ago, to think we would be the leader in our second generation is a achievement,” said Microsoft regional boss Jon Grimes.

“We have great people that have been with us a long time, and now it’s about strengthening that team.

“But what has got us to where we are today is not going to be what gets us through the next ten years. Now we’ve also got to start from scratch when thinking about the future. Driving creativity, whether around marketing, retail or new business models, is key for us.”

UK INDUSTRY IN A 'SPIRAL' OF NEGATIVITY

Xbox UK’s team says the games industry needs to be more positive.

Retail boss Jon Grimes and marketing director Harvey Eagle believes
the negative press about video game sales are having a detrimental
impact upon the market, and that there are reasons to be optimistic.

“I think we’ve got ourselves into a bit of a spiral,” said Grimes.
“We’ve had some great titles over Christmas, but people were
picking out the negative parts. FIFA had its biggest year ever.
Skylanders was a wonderful success. That didn’t tend to hit the headlines.”

Eagle added: “The traditional life cycle of the console is changing.
The market is behaving as we would have predicted. We’ve had
great growth over the last four years. At some point
that begins to tail off and that should be expected.
It’s not a sign of hardship in the future.”

The new Xbox team includes marketing director Harvey Eagle, who was promoted to his role late last year, and sales lead James Wareing, who joins from Nokia. A second sales lead – Anne Lipissier –will join next month from LG.

But does Xbox need to make a move to counter next week’s PlayStation announcement?

“Whatever gets announced on February 20th, the majority of UK consumers won’t know,” Grimes added.

“They’ll still want to buy the devices out there. Our job is not to get lost in the industry chatter, but to ensure that the consumers going into stores, going online, still experience Xbox. The announcement is important for the industry, but it is also important to remember who is buying right now.”

VGLeaks is at it again, posting a lengthy document on the specs and capabilities of Kinect 2.0 - the depth camera and motion sensor said to be bundled with the next generation Xbox, codenamed Durango.

The headline improvements suggested by the leak see an improvement in resolution from both the colour and depth cameras with the introduction of a third sensor allowing Kinect to access the infra-red spectrum, effectively allowing Durango to offer much-improved performance in low-light scenarios. The Kinect interface moves from the USB 2.0 interface to USB 3.0, with end-to-end latency measurements dropping from the older sensor's 90ms down to 60ms.

Boosts elsewhere show clear improvements over the current sensor. The 640x480 RGB camera is upgraded to a more impressive 1080p (with a move from 24-bit RGB colour to a more manageable 16-bit YUV set-up), while depth resolution improves from 320x240 to 512x424. The actual amount of depth being measured (from 40cm away from the camera to a maximum of four metres) remains the same, but field of view is opened up significantly to the point where the tilt sensor on the older Kinect is no longer required on its mooted successor. The leak's author reckons that there'll be less calibration required, and that the system can work around furniture - gamers won't need to re-arrange their living rooms for a quick bout of Kinect gaming.

Improvements to the quality of the data harvested from Kinect are also mooted via the inclusion of an infra-red sensor: "The active IR stream is stable across variable lighting conditions," says the leaked document. "For example, shadows, pixel intensities and noise characteristics are the same for a well-lit room, the same as for no light in the room. As a result, this stream could be used for feature detection in situations where a color stream would be useless."

Rumor: Diablo 3 Heading To XBLA

It’s certainly not unusual for super-secret, industry related news to be leaked because a representative had a slip of the tongue. But it’s also not safe to assume that every gaff is some kind of Freudian slip. However, this little morsel certainly has enough authenticity to file under the “definitely possible” heading.

This morning, Cheat Code Central’s very own Jake Valentine was hanging out with Blizzard crew at PAX East when one of the reps was discussing launch platforms for Diablo 3’s upcoming console release. Now, we already know that Diablo 3 is heading to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, but Microsoft consoles have never been discussed. However, today the rep mentioned that the Xbox would be among Diablo 3’s launch consoles.
