Digital Extremes working on The Darkness 3?

Digital Extremes, the studio behind The Darkness 2 and co-creaters of the Unreal series, are advertising for some new staff to work on a “super secret, hugely anticipated, and very prestigious AAA 1st person shooter”.
The job advertisement outlines Digital Extreme’s desire to continue the passion for and tradition in the industry, talking about their contributions to series such as Unreal and Bioshock. They claim that they are “deeply absorbed in the development” of their new title, suggesting that progress is already well underway.
Advertised positions listed on Gamasutra include a level designer, gameplay programmer, technical animator/rigger, UI designer/artist, and environmental artist.
What could this game be? No details yet on which AAA title this would be exactly, but the most likely would be The Darkness 3. With The Darkness 2 achieving a good amount of critical acclaim and decent sales – not to mention the cliffhanger ending which left significant room for a sequel – a third title in the series would make a lot of sense.
Stay tuned for more details when they emerge.

Killer Instinct trademark secured by Microsoft
Killer Instinct’s trademark is safely back in Microsoft’s hands – but why now?

Microsoft announced the renewal itself on the Play XBLA blog.
“With all due respect to our friends in the media who like to frequent trademark sites, we thought we’d break this one ourselves,” the team wrote.
Although the post gives no indication of why the trademark was re-established, it could be a seen as a tease for upcoming news, as the text is careful to point out that it can only give a limited amount of information at this time.
“Our legal eagles have authorized us to say: ‘We have either renewed or refiled a trademark application in various jurisdictions.’ That’s it.”
The re-surfacing of Killer Instinct now seems a little suspicious; in late August, Rare revealed that Microsoft wasn’t keen on picking up its shelved third entry.
Rare produced the first two fighters in conjunction with Nintendo. Neither has been given the HD treatment or re-released for console networks. Hem hem.
Zynga Hires Mortal Kombat Co-Creator John Tobias
In addition to acquiring game developer A Bit Lucky, Zynga said today it recently hired John Tobias, who co-created the Mortal Kombat series along with Ed Boon. Tobias will serve as creative director at the San Diego studio. He joins Mark Turmel, formally of Midway.
Zynga said the team is working on a "mid-core game."

CGI trailer για το Dead Island Ritpide
Valve hardware division hoping to launch public beta next year
Valve’s new hardware team may have something to show as soon as 2013.

Speaking to Engadget, hardware division head and famous tinkerer Jeri Ellsworth said Valve is already conducting internal betas for the team’s products.
Ellsworth said Valve has the capacity to produce short prototype runs of new products, which would allow it to conduct public betas; she hopes to conduct one next year.
Valve still won’t say what exactly the hardware team is doing – a lot of delighted prototyping, by the sounds of it – but Ellsworth said its one-year goal is “to make Steam games more fun to play in your living room”.
It’s not clear what precisely this means, but the team is working to complement Big Picture Mode and to eliminate control barriers – so some sort of controller, it seems. Remember that controller patent, and the Steambox rumours?
In the longer term, the hardware division is part of Valve’s wearable computing movement, but is looking at a two to five year schedule on those projects.
Ellsworth said not to put too much store by prototypes spotted in images of the team’s workspaces.
“On any given day you could snap a photo of my office and find a variety of prototypes laying around,” she said, explaining that Valve has produced experiments which look good enough to ship, but are still just prototypes.
The latest find from happy snaps of Ellsworth’s workspace include a control pad with an inbuilt screen.

Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn shows off new TGS footage
Final Fantasy 14 is looking pretty swanky in its new duds, as evidenced in this Tokyo Game Show trailer for A Realm Reborn.
A Realm Reborn is a major overhaul to Final Fantasy 14, giving it a visual upgrade among many other improvements; the MMO had a troubled launch, and this undertaking is expected to correct many lingering criticisms. The transition begins in late September with full launch expected later this year ahead of a PlayStation 3 launch in 2013.
