ABI Research: Worldwide mobile data traffic to exceed 107 exabytes in 2017
With more and more people getting a smartphone, mobile data consumption keeps rising. According to a new study by ABI Research, the global volume of mobile data traffic will exceed 107 exabytes in 2017, which is eight times more than what is expected for 2012.

However, ABI’s senior analyst Aapo Markkanen says that although the numbers may sound seemingly big, they shouldn’t be understood as yet another warning of the untamable data tsunami mobile operators often try to portray for regulatory reasons. He goes on to say that 2015 will be the last year when the traffic volume will grow by more than 50% annually.

A lot of the overall data consumption will depend on how much of on-demand video content will in the end be delivered over cellular networks. Netflix was pointed out as a great example for their decision to add a new feature to the iOS app using which users can limit their viewing to Wi-Fi only and thereby avoid overage charges…

HTC Sense 4.1 Leaked For International HTC One X, Based On Android 4.0.4

Εικόνα

When HTC announced the One series of phones last February, Sense 4.0 was being hailed as a huge step toward a lighter, less laggy manufacturer skin that was closer to vanilla Android with some UI improvements. Though Sense 4.0 is significantly better than past versions, it still contains some bottlenecks (home screen, live wallpaper, and app drawer lag) and UI quirks (unsightly menu bar for legacy apps).

Looks like HTC is on the case, however, as the leaked Sense 4.1 RUU shows. Tech site Geeksaber has gone hands on with this new version and lists the following promising observations:

- Live wallpaper lag has been fixed
- There’s a dedicated button in the Camera app to switch between Front/Backward facing cameras. (earlier you’d have to go into the menu for that.)
- A dedicated button to switch tabs in the browser. (You’d have to go into the menu for that, too)
- Complete removal of all 3D-Effects in the launcher leading to a completely lag-free experience.
- Probably the most important- Rebased on Android 4.0.4
- Added ability to remap the recent apps button/ Long-press recent apps/ Long-press Home as Menu. (yes, it removes the Virtual menu bar) under Settings->Display, Gestures and Buttons
- New, blazing fast kernel. We mean it. It scored a pretty impressive 59oo+ in Quadrant benchmark (compared to 5100+ on Sense 4)
- Wifi-dropping/ Icon showing weak signal Fixes.
- Better Battery life- 5 Hour+ Screen-on time as compared to a measly 3 Hour+ on Sense 4.

Not sure whether this is the same version currently being pushed to the AT&T One X, but it seems likely.

XDA developer football already has a ROM based on this version of Sense called HTC One maXimus V2.2, which is available for the international Tegra 3-powered HTC One X. Hopefully, this new Sense will make it to all One series phones soon, including my Evo 4G LTE.

Apple Grabs 73% of Smartphone & Tablet Industry Profits
Samsung shipped double the number of smartphones last quarter than Apple did. According to IDC, the about 50 million units Samsung shipped is is a record for units ever shipped by a handset vendor in a single quarter. Does that matter?

Εικόνα

No.
Because when you look at the broader mobile industry, Apple — thanks to the higher gross margins of the iPhone and iPad — far outshines its rivals in both revenue and operating profits.

Even though Apple only shipped about 6 percent of the industry’s smartphones and tablets in the second quarter, according to Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt, they captured about 43 percent of the industry’s revenue. It generated an incredible 77 percent of the industry’s profits.

So Samsung’s outselling of the iPhone by two to one might be a feel good opportunity for the Korean electronics maker, it’s not a financial plus. Samsung may ship more, but Apple shines where it matters, profit.

“Ultimately, profits are the feedstock of innovation; and, innovation drives profits,” McCourt writes. “Until Samsung starts generating more profits than Apple, we would not be overly concerned with who has the unit share lead. Remember, HP and Dell still sell a lot more PCs than Apple sells Macs, but does it matter?”

Not on the bottom line it doesn’t.

Rumor: Leaked yellow Nokia prototype is the ‘Phi’ Lumia 800 successor

Εικόνα

File this under rumor but certainly plausible. The fan site Nokia Innovations is reporting that the alleged Nokia prototype phone that was leaked last night is in fact the Nokia ‘Phi’. Mind you that’s the code-name not product name, much like the Ace and SeaRay were used for the Lumia 900 and 800 respectively. What’s interesting about Nokia Innovation’s post is that it slghtly pre-dated those images by a few hours as that site was expecting their own images to come forward too.

The notion that Nokia would make a successor to the Lumia 800 is not far fetched at all. It’s a wildly popular design, one that we prefer even over the Lumia 900 due to the curved screen. Evidently Nokia CEO Stephen Elop was impressed with the Lumia 800 that he doesn’t want to let the design go, just have it evolve which to our ears makes sense.

So without further ado, here are some of the rumored specifications of the Lumia 800 successor aka the ‘Phi’...

- It has the same curved screen but bigger screen size (cannot confirm if it will be bigger than the Lumia 900s 4.3inch or the same) hence it will be thicker and far heavier than the Lumia 800. [Edit: We've heard it is closer to ~4.65 inches --Daniel]
- It has the same form factor, that is, polycarbonate unibody with irreplaceable battery (just like the Lumia800)
- No physical buttons on the front
- 4 physical buttons on the right side: up/down vol keys, power button and camera
- It will run on a Qualcomm Dual Core CPU (First Nokia Dual Core WP8 phone)
- It will have external SD card slot
- NFC chip on board.
- LTE enabled

Many people in our comments noted that the phone shown last night is a Lumia 800. But unless the person holding it has unusually small hands, the phone seems bigger than the minute Lumia 800 which only has a 3.7” screen. Indeed, this looks like something in-between the Lumia 800 and 900 with a 4” or bigger display.

It also helps explain the discrepancies with the speaker and slight changes in design. As to why the old flag versus the new one, that is certainly curious although perhaps it was used for 'open' testing and having the new flag may be a dead giveaway.

This device is rumored to be ready for shipment by the end of October, that may lend credence to the idea of why these images leaked in the first place. If coming out of China these images may have originated from one of Nokia’s partners for manufacturing much like the original SeaRay video that was leaked last summer.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 gets serious with Windows 8
Lenovo has officially announced the ThinkPad Tablet 2, its much-leaked Windows 8 slate with optional pen input for what the company describes as “differentiators that matter” in the tablet segment. Headed to stores in October, alongside the launch of Windows 8, the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 packs an Intel Atom processor and a 1,366 x 768 IPS LCD multitouch display, along with a battery good for up to 10hrs runtime.

Εικόνα

That display can be outfitted with an optional stylus, which uses an active digitizer for more precision and slots neatly into a silo on the slate itself. Other options include a fingerprint reader, integrated 3G/4G – with both HSPA+ and LTE variants on offer, and Lenovo already having confirmed AT&T as one carrier – and a ThinkPad-style keyboard for heavy-duty text entry. Finally, there’ll be a desktop dock with HDMI output, a trio of USB ports and wired ethernet.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 has twin cameras, 8-megapixels on the back and a 2-megapixel shooter up-front for video calls, and the whole thing weighs under 600g and is 9.8mm thick. Unsurprisingly, Lenovo is putting a little extra weight on its enterprise potential, hoping to leverage Windows 8′s pro-features to make a dent in the business market.

Εικόνα

What we don’t yet know is exactly how much Lenovo will be charging. The ThinkPad Tablet 2 will be going up against not only Microsoft’s own Surface Pro – the more expensive version of the own-brand tablet, with both stylus control and Windows 8 rather than Windows RT – but the iPad which has already made strong gains in the enterprise marketplace.

Price differences between those two devices are expected to be broad, however; the new iPad starts from $499 while the Surface Pro is tipped to be around the price of an ultrabook, or presumably in excess of $699. Lenovo will tell us more closer to launch.
