Microsoft 'Cloud TV' platform revealed in job postings
Microsoft is known for revealing additional product details in job postings, but a new round of listings has unveiled a brand new TV service. Described as a "Cloud-based TV platform," Microsoft is looking to hire engineers to build client applications for the service. LiveSide spotted several job postings related to Cloud TV recently that tempt job candidates to "get in on the ground floor of an ambitious new project."

Some of the preferred qualifications include experience with mobile and browser application development, with iOS, Android, and Windows 8 / RT listed. The job listings are all part of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business (IEB) division, the same team responsible for Xbox 360, Xbox Live, Zune, and Mediaroom. Microsoft appears to be hiring engineers for a team at the company's Mountain View offices. We've reached out to Microsoft for comment on its Cloud TV plans and we'll update you accordingly.

Kinect Fusion tool coming to Kinect for Windows SDK, will help devs create 3D models
Microsoft has kept its internally-developed Kinect Fusion tool all to itself, but now the firm has announced hot off the heels of Build 2012 that it's working on baking the software into the Kinect for Windows SDK. Concocted by Ballmer and Co.'s Cambridge, UK research lab, the tool can be leveraged to create 3D models of objects or environments, develop augmented reality applications and even take 3D measurements. By the looks of it, creating a model with the tool is a pretty painless process. When passing an object in front of a Kinect or sweeping the hardware throughout an area, the software will use the continuous stream of data collected by the device's sensors and compile it into a 3D model. Intrigued by Kinect Fusion? Hit the jump to catch a video presentation made for SIGGRAPH 2011 by the team behind the software.

Windows 8 overtakes Android in web traffic

Εικόνα

Windows 8 launched on the 26th of October so it’s only been on the market for a couple of weeks but StatCounter is reporting it has already surpassed Android when in comes to internet traffic.

StatCounter aggregates data from a variety of sources, and as you can see in the image above they are saying there are more users surfing the web on Windows 8 than on Android devices. Of course that isn’t a big surprise, as the potential user base for Windows 8 is huge, but even so it’s pretty impressive for an OS that’s only 2 weeks old.

As for Microsoft, the only thing they’ve said is that they had sold 4 million copies of their new OS but that was only four days after launch. If StatCounter data is to be believed that means sales are strong and perhaps have even accelerated. Next up, overtaking iOS which according to Microsoft-News will happen in about a month's time bringing into question the whole "post pc era" mantra.

Windows Store Surpasses 13,000 Apps Already

Εικόνα

The Next Web reports that as of early Wednesday morning, Microsoft's Windows Store contained 12,895 applications. That's roughly 2,895 additional applications that have been added since the Windows 8 storefront reached its 10,000 app mark just eight days prior. Break that down to a daily total, and an average of 362 apps have been added roughly every 24 hours.

WinAppUpdate, which has been keeping track of the tally, said that the daily numbers are actually down. Since the day before Windows 8 officially hit the market (October 26), Microsoft was adding around 500 apps per day – that's how Windows Store zoomed past the 10,000 mark so quickly once it went public.

At the current growth rate, the Windows Store will likely scoot past the 20,000 mark by the end of November or early December. Then again, Microsoft may suddenly push to stock up even more paid apps before the holiday season kicks in, hoping to cash in on the Christmas cheer as consumers receive their bonuses, year-end tips and early gift cards.

But as WinAppupdate points out, there's a lot of "junk" piling up in the Windows Store, similar to the littering problem facing Google Play and what flooded Apple's App Store in the early days. "A ton of the apps that have come into the Windows Store over the last week are just promiscuous apps," the site writes. "I’m not seeing stellar apps that are platform exclusives, and more importantly, I’m seeing a dearth of, well, productivity apps."

What Microsoft needs is developers that will take a chance with both Windows 8 and Windows RT – to take advantage of their unique environments and the overall four-screen experience. Right now developers are seemingly testing the waters, getting familiar with the territory, and many may even be waiting for the Windows 8 consumer base to grow before jumping into the development pool with everything they've got. Some of the more popular desktop apps revised for the Modern UI interface -- including a few of Microsoft's own tools -- feel half-based as it is.

As The Next Web states, Microsoft needs to use its resources to make sure that the Windows Store is not only full, but "full of the right stuff" and not stocked full of thrown-together apps just for the sake of a large, impressive app count. Even more, what the store really needs is a Modern UI version of Halo 4 for PC which, unfortunately, won't happen anytime in the immediate future. Boo hiss.

Microsoft Will Issue Windows 8, Windows RT Security Updates Next Week
Those of you who are (not necessarily long-time) Windows users on your computers should be familiar with the security updates Microsoft is pushing out on a regular basis. Well, now that we have Windows 8 running on tablets alongside Windows RT, you’ve got to get used to seeing patches for your slates too (not that this is a bad thing! Not at all!).

According to Microsoft the company will push out a set of six security updates next week, which will include three for Windows 8 as well as Windows RT, addressing 19 vulnerabilities found in the operating system itself, Internet Explorer and the .NET framework. If you want to learn more specifics about the patches and what they fix hit up the source link below. Else, just keep an eye out for the updates which are believed to be delivering around 1p ET on November 13.

Forget the camera, Elliptic Labs uses sound waves to bring touchless gesturing to Windows 8

Εικόνα

Does Windows 8 touch-heavy focus have you lost and confused? Elliptics Labs may have your solution, with its ultrasound-based technology that lets you swipe and pinch without grazing that display.

How we interact with our PCs is in flux, and nothing has made that more apparent than Windows 8. The latest iteration of the operating system questions everything we’ve come to know about about personal computing, which has won it plenty of advocates as well as enemies.

But a touch-friendly OS isn’t the most innovative thing to happen to the market; in fact, it might be what happens after touchscreens that really revolutionizes our relationship with electronics.

Elliptics Labs is the latest startup to get in on the action with its touchless gesturing technology, which is designed to be compatible with Windows 8 devices. Elliptic Labs uses ultrasound technology to allow users to swipe and pinch away, without so much as brushing a screen.

“Everything is done without touching and there’s no camera involved. It just uses the 3D interaction space around your computer,” chief operating officer Haakon Bryhni tells me.

Of course, Elliptic Labs isn’t the only one investing in touchless technology. The Leap recently made a hugely lauded debut: The consumer-facing device is a mere $70, can be pre-ordered now, and put a tiny accessory in your computer and turned it into a Kinect-like experience (that’s many, many times more accurate). And Tobii has pioneered eye-gaze technology, tracking your optical movement to help you control your computer.

But Bryhni points out the core difference his company brings to the table. While most camera-based solutions are constantly at work, their sensors reading pixels and running your battery ragged, Elliptic Labs uses very small sensors placed inside the screen. This sound wave reading technology uses 95 percent less power than camera-based image-gesture products do.

“We use ultrasound while most are using the camera,” he says. “The benefits of ultrasound is that it uses less power, and it works in rooms with too little or too bright of light. You should be able to completely interact with your device no matter where you are. It’s easy to use in all sorts of environments, and you can leave it on all the time and it won’t hurt battery.”

ou can see in this demo how accurate and responsive the system is – although, consumers can’t buy this technology; Elliptics Labs is strictly marketing it to OEMs. “We are dependent on the OEMs to add this to their laptops, or tablets or mobile phones,” he adds. “Ultrasound sensors are low cost components and we want to make sure the microphone speaks well into the chipsets and work with the chipset menu. We’ve made it very simple for manufacturers, and they don’t have to make a prototype themselves. We have a starter kit, they can create their own UI using our technology, there’s an SDK as well as a Windows 8 interface, and OEMs can make their own apps using gesture recognition.”

While Elliptic Labs is available for Android tablets and smartphones, the company has seen the opportunity Windows 8 has created. “Trying to use a laptop with Windows 8 … it’s weird to use a mouse and keyboard with it,” says Bryhni. “It’s not really made for that. And you don’t want to touch the screen either, so this makes our technology perfect for Windows 8 laptops.”

“We’ve done some user analysis on random users, and when they are exposed to what we have created, they’re amazing and ask us when they can get this product,” Bryhni says. He also adds that a new generation of users are so accustomed to smartphones and tablets, that this familiarity will translate easily to touchless gestures. “We think the time is completely right to introduce touchless interfaces.”

Microsoft To Host Free App Labs For Windows 8 Developers In 30 Cities Around The World
It’s no secret that Microsoft is doing its best to get more developers to write apps for its Windows 8 platform. Today, the company is announcing its newest initiative: Microsoft will host app labs for developers in 30 “technology and design hubs” around the world, including San Francisco, New York, Toronto, London, Paris, Berlin, Shanghai, and Bangalore.

These free four-hour lab sessions will, according to Microsoft, provide developers with “in-depth technical guidance and leading design assistance to get [their] app launched in the Windows Store.” Developers who are interested in signing up for these labs can do so here. In most locations, it seems, Microsoft plans to host these events quite regularly, but it’s not clear how long this initiative is scheduled to run.

Microsoft hosted the first app lab in partnership with RocketSpace earlier this month. According to Microsoft, 120 entrepreneurs, designers and developers attended this kick-off event. As Microsoft’s Antoine Leblond writes in today’s announcement, the company believes that the Windows Store “is a tremendous opportunity not just for established software development companies, but for individuals and startups that have the creativity and ambition to build great, next-generation apps.”

According to Leblond, “nearly half a million developers and entrepreneurs from more than 80 countries” have already started building Metro-style Windows 8 Store apps. It’s worth noting that the Windows Store itself is already open in 200 markets and currently supports more than 100 languages. According to the latest data from Win App Update (Microsoft itself doesn’t release its own numbers for the Store), there are currently about 16,000 apps in the Store worldwide and 9,343 in the U.S. This makes the “half a million” Leblond cites in his post seem a bit high, but maybe he is counting SDK downloads here and not developer registrations for the store.

Last weekend, Microsoft also hosted its global Wowzapp hackathon, which about 17,000 developers attended (most of them students). This event, too, focused on the Windows platform.
