PLOT
The story of Prey 2 focuses on U.S. Marshal Killian Samuels, who starts the game on a passenger flight which suddenly crashes onto the Sphere (the crash is shown in the original Prey). At the end of a short battle with some aliens he is knocked unconscious, after which the plot jumps forward several years. Samuels is now a bounty hunter on the alien world Exodus. Though he is aware of his profession and has retained his skills, he has no memory of what happened in the time that passed since his abduction. He initially believes himself to be the only human on Exodus until he runs into Domasi "Tommy" Tawodi (the protagonist of the original Prey), whom he has apparently met in the period he no longer remembers. Killian then resumes his bounty hunter activities while recovering his memory.

CANCELLATION RUMORS AND RELEASH DELAY
On 23 March, 2012, a Dutch gaming website named PS Focus reported a rumor that Prey 2 has been cancelled by Zenimax. When asked, Bethesda Softworks reported with no comment regarding the rumor on their Twitter page.
On April 19, 2012, Bethesda stated Prey 2 will not be cancelled, but instead it will not make its scheduled 2012 release. This was because "the game's development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year and the game does not currently meet [their] quality standards." A new date has not yet been set forth.

Prey 2 Not Canceled, Just Not Releasing in 2012

Rumors have been swirling around the web for the past few weeks about Prey 2 being canned by its publisher Bethesda Softworks.

To clear up the air and put an end to the rumors, Bethesda released the following statement which I’m sure was a result of endless emails, tweets, and Facebook messages to the publisher concerning the status of title.

“Development of Prey 2 has not been cancelled but the game will not be released in 2012 as planned. The delay is due to the fact that game development has not progressed satisfactorily this past year, and the game does not currently meet our quality standards. Prey 2 has shown great promise and we regret disappointing our fans. We have made a substantial investment in game development to deliver the experience fans want. We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule.”

While no one is a fan of delays — especially when it’s something you’re looking forward to — it’s nice to see developers outside of Blizzard, Valve, and Rockstar take the “it’s ready when it’s ready” approach. Here’s to hoping that an extra year of development will make Prey 2 a worthy follow up.

Prey 2 Development Comes to a Halt, Still not Cancelled

Update: Well that was quick. Pete Hines has just said on Twitter that he never stated that the game was cancelled. We are working on getting in contact with him to see what the status of Prey 2 really is. At this point, it’s safe to assume that the game is in hibernation, and set to be worked on at a later date.

It’s been a very rocky road for Prey 2 as it has been facing development issues, cancellation rumors among other issues. Just a few days ago the game was also removed from Bethesda’s website, with the publisher telling the industry that the game was removed to basically prioritize games like Dishonored and The Elder Scrolls Online. It seems that today was the day to announce the bad news though, as Pete Hines has confirmed to IGN that development on Prey 2 has ceased.

“I can be very clear about this. At one point, we looked at Prey 2 and decided that in its current state, with all the money, time, and resources we put into it, it didn’t meet our expectations. So we decided to pull the plug from our end,” Hines told IGN Benelux. “It was a tough business decision, but at that point it was the right one. It’s never a good thing to have to make those choices. It’s a shame, but it comes with the territory.”

Unfortunately, Human Head cannot just take the game to another publisher as Bethesda owns the Prey franchise. If I were you, I’d avoid looking at any previous footage the game had to offer, as will make you crave for a game that might of done something new in the FPS/Open World genre. Hopefully some developer takes inspiration from what could have been and makes a game with a similar concept.

Σύμφωνα με φήμες η ανάπτυξη του Prey 2 δεν βρίσκεται πλέον στη δικαιοδοσία της Human Head, αλλά της Arkane Studios. Σύμφωνα με τις ίδιες φήμες, η Human Head καθόταν επί ένα χρόνο σε αναμμένα κάρβουνα, περιμένοντας την απόφαση της Bethesda για την ανάπτυξη του παιχνιδιού. Από την πρώτη παρουσία του, στην Ε3 του 2011, το παιχνίδι βρέθηκε στα χέρια της Obsidian για μερικούς μήνες, ενώ η Bethesda προσπάθησε ακόμα να πείσει τη Rebellion να αναλάβει την ανάπτυξή του, όμως το απέρριψε.



Τώρα λοιπόν βρίσκεται στα χέρια της Arkane Studios, πολλοί υπάλληλοι της οποίας δεν είναι και τόσο ικανοποιημένοι που θα πρέπει να δουλέψουν πάνω σε αυτό, ενώ η εταιρία τους προτρέπει να ξεχάσουν το όνομα Prey 2 και να το αντιμετωπίσουν ως ένα νέο System Shock. Η Bethesda δεν έχει προβεί σε κανένα επίσημο σχόλιο έως τώρα και μέχρι να ανκοινωθεί κάτι επίσημα καλό θα είναι όλα αυτά να τα αντιμετωπίσουμε ως φήμες και μόνο.

Το φουτουριστικό FPS της Bethesda Softworks έρχεται ξανά στο προσκήνιο μετά από πολύ καιρό, αφού πρόσφατα διέρρευσαν στο διαδίκτυο αρκετές εικόνες από το project, οι οποίες δείχνουν ότι το Prey 2 βρίσκεται σε προχωρημένο στάδιο ανάπτυξης. Μάλιστα, σε αυτές παρουσιάζονται πολλά στοιχεία από το gameplay. Υπενθυμίζεται, ότι σύμφωνα με τις πρώτες πληροφορίες ο εν λόγω τίτλος αναμένεται να κυκλοφορήσει για PC, Xbox 360 και PS3 και ύστερα από αυτή τη διαρροή ίσως θα πρέπει να περιμένουμε και επίσημη τοποθέτηση από την Bethesda.
