Dead Island Riptide's new character revealed

Fans of classic Steven Seagal movie Under Siege, your prayers have been answered. Dead Island Riptide publisher Deep Silver today unveiled the zombie FPS-RPG's new fifth playable character, and he's the closest we may ever get to seeing old Steve's character star in a video game--a Navy cook with furious fists of martial arts fury.
"For years he has trained himself - and become a master - in hand-to-hand combat," Deep Silver explained. "His career in the US Navy has not taken off as he originally had envisioned, so he spends his time as a cook on a military ship. Little does he know that soon he will have to bring his skills into practice when the ship nears the island of Palanai..." I quote this lengthy piece of fluff text purely so I can then state my hopes that he'll crack plenty of culinary puns as he cracks zombie skulls with his powerful kung-fu grip.
Riptide lurches at PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 23, 2013, developed by creator Techland. Yes, of course there's a Special Edition.

THQ delays South Park, Company of Heroes 2, and Metro: Last Light

In their second quarter fiscal report today, THQ stated that they will be delaying three of their games that were originally planned for an early 2013 release: South Park: The Stick of Truth, Company of Heroes 2, and Metro Last Light.
Out of the three games, South Park: The Stick of Truth was delayed the furthest putting it at early fiscal 2014. THQ's President, Jason Rubin, said this about the delay:
“I believe South Park’s market opportunity is significant. It is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated titles of calendar 2013. It is also an expansive title, encompassing multiple television seasons’ worth of content. We have been working closely with the co-creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, to make sure all of the game’s content performs to the high standards of the TV show, and this takes time. THQ is committed to giving gamers no less than the rich South Park game they have been waiting for and deserve."
Both Company of Heroes 2 and Metro: Last Light were planned for an "early" 2013 release but both have received a slight delay as they're now expected to ship in March 2013.
The rest of the news was not good for THQ. Even though Darksiders II was rated fairly well, 84 on Metacritic, the same did not sell as well as expected. Both sales and stock prices were down from the same point last year, even after many layoffs from their developer studios, THQ staff. and game cancellations.
Splinter Cell: Blacklist director predicts shift toward “lower-case aaa” game design
Splinter Cell: Blacklist Director Patrick Redding gave a speech at Toronto’s Gamercamp festival regarding the industry’s movement patterns away from blockbuster, linearly designed AAA projects to more open-ended, player-driven approaches popularized by sandbox titles such as Minecraft. As GamesIndustry reports, Redding believes the latter constitutes a new wave of “lower-case aaa” games marrying quality with “systemic depth.”
“The market as a whole is going to undergo a critical shift in priorities, a shift away from the absolute primacy of graphics and production values and content creation toward systemic depth,” he explained. “This trend is going to trigger a reality check for developers like me who work on established franchises with a large succession of sequels, and it’s also going to be a call-to-arms for smaller game creators.”
Redding noted a key ingredient for “aaa games” involves the player forging his or her path to victory with the tools provided by the system—instead of a singularly clear win condition, many possibilities exist to progress the player onward. Redding also mentioned a byproduct of this approach eschews authorial control from developers and publishers as players craft their own experiences independently of any direction. Hey, that sounds familiar.

Kids Visit Gabe Newell For His Birthday, Give Him DLC as Present

It was Valve boss Gabe Newell's birthday on November 3, and to mark the occasion, some kids from 4chan's /v/ (the board's video games group) went and paid him a visit in the flesh.
In addition to giving him a giant card (which they do every year), and getting the chance to wish him a happy birthday in person (not to mention pick up some swag), they also presented him with a gift. A box. Which Newell was charged $2.50 to open.
Inside? A hat.
I won't say this often, but well played, /v/, well played.
One of The Great Artists of Our Time Now Has a Video Game
Roger Dean is one of the greatest pop artists of the 20th century, his work memorable amongst both music fans and gamers alike.
So it's both weird and welcome that, this being 2012, we've finally got a game devoted entirely to his work, and not just using it for a cover, or logo, or arcade cabinet.
Roger Dean Dragon's Dream is a mobile game that plays a lot like Jetpack Joyride (and its ilk), only you're controlling a dragon flying through the landscape featured in perhaps Dean's most iconic work, Dragon's Dream.
The game should be out on the App store soon.
Destiny: Details leaked from secret presentation of Bungie's new game - report
Open multiplayer shooter "still quite like Halo", according to rumoured leak

According to Superannuation via Kotaku, Bungie recently showed the game off to Vancouver-based online infrastructure studio, Demonware, which handles online tech for Call of Duty and is believed to be working with Bungie on Destiny.
The report claims to have recovered details from an insightful blog post about the presentation day and a hands-on session at Bungie, reportedly written by a senior Demonware employee.
The post, which Superannuation says has since been deleted with only a snapshot of a Google cache page as evidence of its existence, details a presentation "covering everything from game story, factions, art, engineering, tool chain, graphics, audio, player investment mechanisms, player progression, UI, and web and mobile apps".
It added that Bungie offered "a live scene walk through demonstrating lots of atmospherics, huge amounts of trees and foliage (SpeedTree), particle effects, dynamic lighting and dynamic time of day ending in a sun set", before giving attendees hands-on time with the game.
Describing the gameplay experience as "still quite like Halo", the anonymous attendee detailed their exploits with Destiny:
"This is not a dedicated server game, but there is some simulation and coordination running in their server infrastructure. The game was up and down a lot, playing in a team of 3 we did manage to experience entering a zone to find other players already taking on the bad guys, it's cooperative so we helped out (mostly [name removed], I just died) before both groups went their separate ways. Which is a pretty cool experience, making you feel you are part of a much larger populated world.
"At the end of the day I was excited about the game, I like the feel of being in a large world with different destinations and the interactions along the way. It actually brought back a sense of exploration I recall from playing [Elite] many years ago, although there was no opportunity to shoot aliens in the face in Elite. I'm not fully sold on the appeal of being able to change the colour of a weapon, but I guess it works in China, and customization and individual identity is a big theme for the game."
Little is known of Bungie's new project, which is tied into a ten-year exclusive multiplatform deal with Activision, although it's rumoured to be an MMO styled action shooter.
The publisher said in February: "We continue to lay the foundation for our new universe from Bungie, one of the world's best developers.
"Bungie continues to make incredible progress on what we expect to be a genre-defining new IP that will provide us with tremendous new opportunities, and which remains one of our key strategic growth pillars for the future."

Ever wondered what the author of The Witcher books thinks about the games?

Abduction is a stealth-based game being built using CryEngine 3
Abduction is a rather interesting looking stealth game in development using the CryEngine 3, and while it seems a bit dark in the literal sense, there’s a reason for it. According to the developer entry over on the CryDev forums, Abduction players must use the “coat of the darkness” to maneuver and kill their enemies in the game. Players will be able to use rig rooms, traps, and spying techniques to dispatch their enemies, gain information, and progress. You can have a look at the game’s progress through the link, where you’ll find plenty of screenshots and a list of fixes and additions in the works.
Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs will be “fairly traditional yet quietly radical in other ways,” says Pinchbeck
Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs will be “fairly traditional in some ways,” yet “quietly radical in others,” according to thechineseroom’s Dan Pinchbeck.

Speaking with GameInformer, Pinchbeck detailed how A Machine for Pigs takes atmospheric interaction from Dear Esther, and mixes it with the horror the player felt when playing Amnesia. It sounds as though it be one, volatile cocktail of scares with heart palpitations galore.
“Amnesia is fairly traditional in some ways but quietly radical in others,” said Pinchbeck. “One of the things it really does is it’s about buying the player emotional time and space to have this amazing emotional reaction to what’s going on, particularly in the terms of the horror, which is really self-generated.
“That’s a really natural fit with the types of things we were doing with Dear Esther. It’s the kind of focus on story and emotional space that should slot into the Amnesia architecture pretty well. Because an awful lot of that in the Dark Descent is you walking down a corridor or hiding in a cupboard, doing all the work of the graphics card imagining what’s on the other side of the door from you. That’s a weirdly parallel thing to what’s going on in Dear Esther, having a bunch of ideas thrown at you and really you’re building the story that’s just out of reach.”
Pinchbeck added that Frictional Games’, which is executive producing the game, is providing “very extensive feedback” and support for the title, yet it has essentially allowed thechineseroom to just take its baby and run with it.
“Effectively, they pay for the game and then we’re going off making it,” he said. “Every few months we drop a bunch of levels on them, they give us very extensive feedback, and we work through that crazy process together. And they’re on hand to support any kind of technical issues we have with the engine.
“We have this really nice relationship where we’ve got an enormous amount of creative freedom but we also have all this support whenever we want it. They’re great to work with in terms of honing the levels down because they’re so clued in now for how to creative the right kind of experiences for horror games.
“We’ve got access to some of the best horror designers out there. They’re helping us make this the best game it possibly can be. They steer and support us as we go along.”
Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs is due early 2013.

Origin client update to add Twitch.TV streaming function
Origin will be updated over the next few days with a couple of new features including TwitchTV integration and the ability to add non-Origin titles to your collection.

As detailed in an EA blog post, players will be able to sync their Origin ID to an existing or new Twitch account, and then quickly switch their Origin games into broadcast mode.
Twitch broadcast mode is activated form the usual Origin In Game menu, and an on-screen indicator will remind you that you’re still online, how many viewers you have, and how long you’ve breen streaming. This display can be deactivated if you prefer.
