Demon's Souls Servers Staying Online
ATLUS said today it's extending the North American online servers for Demon's Souls. The game was originally going offline at the end of this month. No specific time table has been set, but ATLUS said the servers will be left on for the "foreseeable future."

"We're incredibly excited to be able to announce that the Demon's Souls online experience will persist for a while longer," stated Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at ATLUS. "While it originally seemed as though it would be unfeasible for us to continue to sustain the servers, a number of developments have made it possible for us to continue to invest in and support our fans as they have continued to invest in and support us and Demon's Souls.

"For all the gamers who have yet to discover the game's amazing online experience, we're happy to say you can still log on and find out why Demon's Souls is still regarded by many as one of the finest games of all time."

ATLUS won't rule out the possibility of future extensions of the North American servers, provided user activity and interest remain constant, the publisher said.

Περήφανο darkwraith θα έλεγα αν και με τόσα indict που χω φάει , σπάνε μπάλες τα blades of the darkmoon. Παρ' όλα αυτά δίνουν και τα περισσότερα Souls τα παλικάρια οπότε μάλλον σε καλό μου βγαίνει.

New Dark Souls Content Coming to Consoles
Have you conquered every enemy and collected every powerful item in Dark Souls? Well, sometime this winter, you'll have the opportunity to get repeatedly murdered by all-new merciless monsters regardless of which version you own.

Namco Bandai has announced that the new content included in the Dark Souls: Prepare to Die PC version of From Software's dark fantasy role-playing game will also be released for consoles. Sometime this winter in North America, the Artorias of the Abyss expansion content will be sold through Xbox Live for 1200 Microsoft Points and PlayStation Network for 14.99 USD.

Artorias of the Abyss adds more explorable areas, bosses and standard enemy types, non-player characters, armor and weapons into From Software's notoriously difficult experience. See the trailer below for a brief glimpse of some of the horrors that will soon invade the world of Dark Souls.

*Confirmed – Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will use Games For Windows LIVE
Earlier today, we informed you about Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition’s latest trailer. However, we are here now to bring you some bad news. A lot of PC gamers had high hopes when Namco announced that the PC version of Dark Souls would hit Steam. Don’t get your hopes up though as it will not support Steamworks. In fact, From Software has officially revealed today that the game will use Games for Windows LIVE.
The company has updated their official product page and as we can see below, the game will use Microsoft’s GFWL. This is the first time that GFWL has been confirmed, as the boxart of the game stated that Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition would only be a Games for Windows title and there was no mention at all for the LIVE service. However, this is not the case with the game’s product page, as we can clearly see that it will require Games for Windows LIVE.
Our guess is that From Software ported the online code from the X360 version and as a result of that, they decided to use GFWL in order to avoid any kind of – possible – compatibility issues.

From Software "having a tough time" porting Dark Souls to PC, frame rate issues remain
Dark Souls developer From Software is having a torrid time getting its beloved action RPG up and running on PC and has confirmed it isn't including any optimisations for desktop gamers.

Producer Daisuke Uchiyama told Eurogamer that it had underestimated how tough it would be to port the game across.

"To be completely honest, we're having a tough time doing it due to our lack of experience and knowledge in terms of porting to PC. First we thought it would be a breeze, but it's turned out not to be the case. We're still developing right now - we're crunching right now.

"In Japan there's not much of a PC market and we haven't really taken into consideration that audience before. That's one of the reasons why we haven't been able to step up on the PC platform until now."

Uchiyama went on to confirm that it hasn't fixed the frame rate problems that had hobbled certain parts of the game on consoles.

"In terms of the frame rate for say, Blighttown, From Software sincerely apologises for that happening [in the console version]," he said.

"In terms of the PC version, the quick answer is no, [we won't be fixing the frame rate problems]. Because we wanted to get the PC version out as soon as possible, it's more strictly a port from the console version. We haven't been able to step up into doing any specific optimisation for PC.

"However, in exchange for that, we have prioritised adding new content for both original players and new players."

Happily, that new content appears to be very substantial. Uchiyama estimated that it should take a reasonably skilled player around 10 hours to get through the new areas.

What's more, it'll be fully integrated into the game rather than siphoned off from the main menu. Console gamers who buy it as DLC will be able to use their existing character, though they'll need to have progressed quite a way through the story before they can access the extra areas.

"We have three new venues, four new bosses and additional weapons," he explained.

"Accessing the new content is a little bit complicated. Depending on where you are in the storyline it may differ in terms of how it's integrated.

"There will be a certain point in the game that you'll have to surpass to access the new content. It won't be right from the beginning - the new content will be accessible more in the later half of the game."

The added narrative focuses on the character Artorias, referenced throughout the original release but never seen.

"In the console version only the name of Artorias has been brought up, but in the new content you'll actually see him as a character," revealed Uchiyama.

"The story itself is going to take place in the past. The player will be dragged into the past, 300 years back when Artorias was not a legend but actually existed."

Finally, Uchiyama touched on the future of the franchise, insisting that there are currently no plans for ports to other platforms or a full sequel.

"We are fully concentrating on delivering the PC version and DLC. There has not been any discussion about anything past that. So there's nothing in the works right now," he said.

"Speaking from the developer's perspective, even considering the new Wii U features or the Vita, because they are so specific to those platforms, if we were able to do something on those systems the game would be designed to fit those platforms rather than just be a port from the PS3 or 360."

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition launches for PC on 31st August, with the new content the landing on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as DLC towards the end of the year.

Dark Souls: PC version will have "minimal mouse and keyboard support," uses Games for Windows Live "to provide game as soon as possible."
The PC version of Dark Souls exists because of the petition to create it, says the game's producer Daisuke Uchiyama, who's at E3 talking to journalists. We sat down with him to talk over the details; including why they picked Games For Windows Live, and how PC gamers who want to get the best from Dark Souls should use a joypad.

The petition for a PC version made the devs "very, very happy," says Daisuke. "When we first started to decide to do the PC version, we spoke about adding new content. Being able to take the console version and add new content to it is entirely down to the petition." In fact, the dev team got a bit carried away: Prepare To Die contains three additional venues, four additional boss characters as well as additional weapons and armor."

But the scale of the petition took the developers by surprise, and they made the decision to get the game out as quickly as possible. "Our experience with Microsoft's servers was something that was very beneficial for the development team. Because we wanted to provide it as soon as possible, we went with Games for Windows Live."

The PC version also brings additional headaches; Dark Souls is tuned to near perfection around the use of a joypad. "Because it's so finely tuned, we'd like PC players to use the gamepad. We'll have minimal keyboard and mouse support."

Even so, Daisuke has a huge amount of respect for hardcore PC gamers, who he says "get deep down into the actual gameplay, whatever game that might be. We're really looking forward to see how PC gamers will feel when they play the game more in-depth."
