Halo 4: A New Enemy Awakens… It’s About Time! After years of waiting! After countless glorious hours of game-play carnage through an epic trilogy! After two massive spin offs and one re-make, the Halo series will finally see the launch of its true sequel, with the return of Master Chief… it’s great to see you again old friend. Now, first off, with any new addition to the Halo franchise there is a lot to live up to. Each new addition has boasted a constant drive to innovate, while also not straying too far from what has constantly made these games such a pleasure to play. Whether it’s the smooth game-play mechanics, the strange mysterious settings and the massive battlefields. It is all of these features that define Halo for what it is. Each new game has never failed to bring something new to the table, as seen with the incredibly addicting Forge mode in Halo 3.
Now that Bungie have stepped away from the franchise in pursuit of brand new horizons, it falls to 343 Industries to take up the mantle and continue Master Chief’s story. I must admit that 343 has definitely impressed me so far, with every conference and every video posted managing to constantly wow the gaming community. But what has really impressed me is that they are finally fleshing out Master Chief’s character, something that only the books have touched upon. There are so many questions that fans have pondered over the new installment, what will the story be about? Will we get to finally see Chief’s face? Who will we fight after the Covenant were seemingly beaten at the end of Halo 3? But with a new storyline comes a new enemy, and this is truly what gamers should be looking forward to.
Over the course of the series The Covenant have been great enemies for several different reasons. Not only does each race flare with artistic imagination and uniqueness, but have consistently been solid enemy AI’s that will stop at nothing until you are dead. The energy-sword wielding Elites, the plasma cannon firing Hunters or even the comically pathetic Grunts, all make up a collection of alien races, that have been some of the best villains the gaming world has had the pleasure to face. Through each confrontation with these extraterrestrial menaces, the player has had to form a strategy in order to take them down. Firing at the Jackal’s weak spot through its plasma shield, punching the unsuspecting Elite in the back and exploiting the Hunters fatal weak spots are just a few strategies at the player’s disposal.
The footage shown by 343 at this year’s E3 was a stroke of genius by the developers, not only for showcasing how visually stunning the game is, but also by how it introduces the deadly new threat the Master Chief will have to face. As the super-soldier stalks through a lush green jungle, he suddenly comes into conflict with a group of Covenant forces. As the Spartan open fires on his old foes, the remaining Elite rushes towards the player before being blasted into oblivion by an unknown entity. A few more seconds into the footage and Chief comes across a number of four legged enemies called Crawlers, that spit energy projectiles through their pincers. It is when a tall slender like figure jumps from the trees and onto the unsuspecting Spartan that we finally see the true enemy of the game. The Promethean Knight looms over the Master Chief before preceding to open its helmet and scream into the players face, revealing a terrifying skull-like face that just reeks of awesome. These new foes are said to be the most abundant enemy that the Chief will come across, replacing the Covenant as the main antagonists. The Covenant now more of a small band of rebels than the massive threat that they were in the previous games. The Elite being eradicated by these Knights represents how much more fearsome these new opponents will be.
The idea of the new threat being a great change for the series can be definitely seen, when thinking about what new game-play opportunities facing them will offer. The Knights wield a deadly arsenal, with a Foreunner weapon in one hand and a blade in the other, complete with the ability to teleport. Not to mention being able to spawn a Watcher, another new enemy of the series that provides shield support and the ability to catch grenades in midair. Players will be forced to re-think the way they fight these mechanical fiends, that have a variety of different ways to kill you. There are bound to be more enemies waiting to be revealed as we come closer to launch, including an illusive nemesis for the Chief to confront. Even so, a new enemy is just one of many new features to the series that is shaping Halo 4, to be possibly the greatest of them all.
