Mirror's Edge 2 'is on the list' - EA EA boss suggests that bringing back Mirror's Edge is more a case of 'when' than 'if'. A sequel to Mirror's Edge is "on the list" of things to do, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau has suggested, saying it's "really about how and when" to bring the series back.
"We have nothing to announce," said Gibeau speaking in the latest issue of Game Informer. "We love Faith. We love the property. It's really about how and when do you bring it back?
"It's on the list. It's just about looking at what teams are available, who's got the right quality approach to it, and who understands it."
EA has often hinted that a sequel to 2008's first-person free-runner could be in development.
In 2009, EA's Patrick Soderlund told VideoGamer that a "small team" was working on Mirror's Edge 2. Then, during E3 2011, Gibeau hinted that a sequel could be developed using DICE's Frostbite 2 engine.
Later in the year, DICE's Karl-Magnus Troedsson suggested that Battlefield 3's success could improve the chances of Mirror's Edge 2 being built, saying that "part of our strategy moving forward as a studio [is] that we don't just want to build Battlefield."
*Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition incoming SEGA may be working on an HD collection for Yakuza. A listing for Yakuza 1 & 2 HD Edition was supposedly located on SEGA’s official website, though it was removed soon after.
A screengrab of the entry, shown above, indicates that the package will be released in Japan on December 1 for 5,229 yen. Consumers will be able to purchase the remastered games for the PlayStation 3.
*Gearbox may change the title of Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 Game is changing a lot – much like the art style shift for Borderlands.
By the time Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 hits stores it may be known by another name, Gearbox founder Randy Pitchford has told VideoGamer.com.
Unable to comment too much on the title at this time – Gearbox is currently focussed on Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines – Pitchford said: "It's evolved quite a lot. When I do talk about it again, you'll see a big change. But I'll be talking about that later. I'm not sure, but we'll definitely not talk about it before Borderlands launches, we might even wait until Aliens launches. But we might talk just before Aliens, we'll see."
He later added: "The other thing too, because on the game-side it's changed a lot – you know like when we changed the art direction for Borderlands? It's still evolving, that's one of the other reasons we're not talking about it. It's not inconceivable that we might even change the name."
Pitchford also explained why some believed the game had been cancelled.
"The reason that rumour showed up is because Ubisoft submitted the trademark, and they submitted with joint [credits for] Ubisoft and Gearbox – and the US Trademark and Patent Office rejected it, because Gearbox holds the trademark for Brothers In Arms.
"First we thought we'd write a waiver, because Ubisoft offered to handle the logistics – we just want to make games. Then we decided, 'Well, we'll just submit it ourselves,' so we let that one terminate.
"But what's awesome is we proved no-one else could submit a trademark for Brothers In Arms: Furious Four – because the Trademark Office has got our back! Which is cool."
Gearbox's Borderlands 2 will be released September 21 for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
Software One of the most interesting entries on this month’s top ten software charts is an absence. Grashopper Manufacture’s Lollipop Chainsaw failed to make the top ten despite favourable reviews and a cult following; it shifted just 107,000 units. The critically-acclaimed developer’s last effort, Shadows of the Damned, performed poorly this time last year, too.
Instead it was Lego Batman 2 that stormed to top spot.
“Batman may be on consumer’s minds with Batman: Arkham City also ranking sixth, and with the latest movie, Dark Knight Rises, debuting later in July,” Frazier said.
June 2012 Top 10 Games (New Physical Retail only; across all platforms incl. PC)
- Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (360, Wii, PS3, NDS, 3DS, PSV, PC) - Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (360, PS3, PC) - Diablo III (PC) - Max Payne 3 (360, PS3, PC) - NBA 2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC) - Batman Arkham City (360, PS3, PC) - Pokemon Conquest (NDS) - Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (360, PS3, Wii, PC) - Battlefield 3 (360, PS3, PC) - The Amazing Spider-Man (360, PS3, 3DS, NDS, Wii)
Hardware As noted above, hardware sales dropped 45% year on year. The Xbox 360 shifted 257,000 units for the strongest performance, granting Microsoft its 18th consecutive month at the top, but it’s a 49% year-on-year decline.
According to Nintendo, the 3DS shifted 155,000 units, an 8% jump on 2011, barely more than little brother the DS with 150,000. The Wii trailed not far behind with 95,000. Both older consoles saw significant year-on-year drops, as you’d expect.
At time of writing, Microsoft and Sony had no comment on June sales results, but Nintendo announced that US sales of the 3DS have passed 5 million units.
