Aliens: Colonial Marines leaves women out of multiplayer, spurs petition
Sometimes we really do not understand why games developers are so odd. I swear that sometimes they sit in their evil lairs, twirling their stupidly long moustaches and hatching out ways to randomly annoy people. Gearbox are the latest team to aggravate a demographic, and it’s are pretty big one too – women.
According to Melissa K. (MOOSH89), Gearbox producer Brian Burleson has said that Aliens: Colonial Marines will not feature any female marines when playing multiplayer modes. This spurred her on to create a petition to push for women to appear in the game’s online components.
We are really not sure why women were left out. I mean surely they can use the same character models and assets used for the single player characters. Also the Alien series is famous for having a strong female lead (Ripley), an Alien Queen and the ship’s AI is even called “Mother”. Girl power!
Melissa commented on the odd situation saying:
“Women are a big part of the ALIENS universe. The main character, the Queen Alien, the supporting female cast members, and even the United States Colonial Marines has many female marines, roughly close to the same number as men enlisted.”
It seems that Gearbox may have already picked up on this though as they stated:
“Women soldiers don’t necessarily need to look or act much different, especially in a setting like Aliens where they all act like stereotypical marines anyway,”
The petition has only got 349 signatures at the moment but is steadily growing.
We hope that we have some virtual female teammates when playing online. Afterall nobody likes a sausage fest.

*Aliens: Colonial Marines – “Escape Multiplayer Mode” Unveiled

SEGA Europe and Gearbox Software today announced Escape mode, a new competitive multiplayer mode, for its highly anticipated blockbuster Aliens: Colonial Marines video game, launching February 12, 2013 worldwide. With a competitive death match game mode already revealed earlier in the year, Escape mode is the second in a number of competitive multiplayer modes for Aliens: Colonial Marines and will challenge players in an intense scenario against the universe’s deadliest killers, the Xenomorph.
An exhilarating experience for fans of the ALIENS universe, Escape mode puts the four-person US Colonial Marines team on the offensive against a four-player Xenomorph team. The Colonial Marines must blast their way through the fast-paced map in order to escape the attacking Xenomorphs, who in return will try to eliminate their prey as quickly as possible. Under the pressure and limited in time, players will have to work together as a team, utilizing each faction’s unique skills, and identifying their opponents’ weak spots to either reach the safety of the escape point or to eliminate their targets.
In partnership with Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products and developed by critically acclaimed studio Gearbox Software, Aliens: Colonial Marines will bring new levels of bone-chilling suspense and adrenaline-filled action to the renowned franchise. As the authentic addition to the ALIENS franchise canon, the game’s stunning visuals and adrenaline pumping action will deliver a breathtakingly immersive four-player drop-in drop-out cooperative campaign and expansive competitive multiplayer mode.
Providing for an innovative asymmetrical competitive multiplayer experience, Aliens: Colonial Marines lets players fight in first person as the ultimate badasses – the United States Colonial Marines, or in third person as the universe’s deadliest killers – the Xenomorphs. Plunging into familiar and new environments from the iconic film franchise, players will have to fight the fear and face the true horrors of the ALIENS universe.
Aliens: Colonial Marines will be available in stores across the globe on February 12, 2013 PS3, X360 and PC. A release date for the announced Wii U version will be revealed at a later time.

*GameStop Expo 2012: Hands-on with Aliens: Colonial Marines multiplayer

One of the highly anticipated titles for the first quarter of 2013 is Gearbox Software’s Aliens: Colonial Marines. Not only because the game will focus on the more action-oriented Colonial Marines that fight off the Xenomorphs, but for the simple fact that the game has gone through so many issues on its way to release.
At the GameStop Expo, a 4 vs. 4 Team Deathmatch setup was there for people to play. A team of Sega QA was playing as Xenomorphs while Expo goers were the Colonial Marines. The stage we played on was outdoors at night, though it was lit up well, and various boxes and cabins were scattered throughout the map. There were no character choices, and the loadouts were all the same with your weapons being a pulse rifle and a shotgun.
When the match started, players spawned near each other, and it became a matter of coming together to prepare for the Xenomorphs. In the demo, there was only the “traditional” Xenomorphs that everyone is familiar with and a large bull Xenomorph that appeared later on in the match.
As is often the case with the Xenomorphs, pulse rifles and shotguns put them down fairly quickly. Of course, the advantage the Xenomorphs have is the speed, ability to climb up walls, and very strong attacks. Seriously, if one of the aliens is on you, you’re dead. Sometimes you can fend them off just long enough for a teammate to take it down, but more often than not, you’re going down. The larger bull Xenomorph took a concerted effort to take down as it has tougher armor as well as the ability to run over players and kill them.
Both the pulse rifle and shotgun had a secondary shot to them. The pulse rifle had a grenade launcher which is always nice to have. The shotgun had an electric shot to it, but I didn’t see the effectiveness of it. Although there is no HUD map, you can use a motion tracker, just like in the movies, to see where the aliens are coming from.
Up close, the game has some beautiful gore to it. Lots of blood gets scattered everywhere when the Xenomorphs pounce on the marines. There are also some brutal executions that the aliens can do to further add insult to injury. I loved the map; dead bodies covered by bloody sheets were scattered everywhere giving you the grim reminder that this was a place of death.
After playing the Aliens: Colonial Marines’ Team Deathmatch mode, I can see players spending a lot of time on it. There difference between the two opposing teams seem to be about just right, and the ability to level up equipment for the marines and evolve as the Xenomorphs, although not in the demo, should add to the multiplayer and keep the gameplay fresh. Aliens: Colonial Marines is scheduled for release on February 12th, 2012.
