There Will Be 34 MGS 4 Trophies
Konami has confirmed, via an official press release, the news that MGS 4 will be getting Trophies. There will, apparently, be 34 of them.

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH today announced it is to release free DLC for its multi-million-selling METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Guns of the Patriots title for PlayStation 3.

As part of the continuing celebrations of the METAL GEAR series’ 25th anniversary, Kojima Productions has revisited its best-selling title to add 34 new Trophies to the game.

METAL GEAR SOLID 4: Guns of the Patriots concludes the tale of series hero’ Solid Snake, as the ageing stealth operative is drawn into a final mission where a genetically-raised army is amassing familiar weapons under the leadership of an old enemy.

We’ll see if we can find out what those trophies might be.

This morning we confirmed that there will also be a “full” install option when the game re-releases in August, although it’s not clear if this applies to the patch too.

Solid Snake interrupts our Quinton Flynn Arcade Con panel
We were waiting for this to surface….

Last weekend, we here at TGL hosted a Q&A Panel at Arcade Con 212 in Dublin with acclaimed voice actor Quinton Flynn, best known to gamers as the voice of Raiden in the extended Metal Gear franchise.

As part of the panel, we arranged that our Q&A session would be interrupted by a CODEC call or two from a couple of Raiden’s old Metal Gear friends, Solid Snake and Colonel Roy Campbell. TGL’s buddies David Hayter and Paul Eiding lent their voices to a handful of original CODEC voice overs for us and it goes without saying that they did an incredible job. I think the reaction of the audience to the Solid Snake CODEC below says it all.

We’re going to go ahead and publish every CODEC video and tell you the story behind the CODEC calls very shortly. Watch this space. In the mean time, enjoy the video below provided by YouTube user JenniferMulkerrin.

When asked by a fan in the audience if Quinton can do a good David Hayter/Solid Snake impersonation, a certain somebody calls in with his own “impersonation”. Enjoy.

Kojima Productions has revealed a few more details regarding the upcoming trophy and full install update for the Playstation 3 exclusive title, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. You can check out some screenshots from the video game in the slideshow at the top of this article and the details below.

In their latest podcast episode, the studio revealed that you can’t just load your old save file and expect to earn trophies. Instead, you will have to replay Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Kojima Productions explained that this is done because the game created before trophy system was in place and that it will prevent players from downloading saves to exploit the trophies. As for the full install update, they revealed that the previous chapter-by-chapter install was necessary due to initial batch of Playstation 3 having small hard drives. The new patch will let you play through entire game with “quick loading times.”

Kojima Productions will be announcing a date for the trophy and full install update at the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary event, which is scheduled to be take place on August 30th.

411 Interview: Metal Gear Rising Team

At E3 2012, Ernest Lin spoke with Metal Gear Rising Executive Director/Producer Atsushi Inaba and Creative Producer Yuji Korekado about the upcoming game in the hit Japanese franchise.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was one of my most anticipated games of E3 2012. It takes the Metal Gear franchise in a new direction. After getting some hands on time with the game at the Konami booth, I met with Platinum's Atsushi Inaba (Metal Gear Rising Executive Director/Producer) and Kojima Productions' Yuji Korekado (Metal Gear Rising Creative Producer) to ask them some questions regarding the project.

What did you like about making a game starring Raiden?

Korekado: Probably the most fun about Raiden is the fact is that he is a cyborg, so you get this really strong cyborg character with inhuman abilities. Also, he has a sword that can cut through anything: the high frequency blade. So from that core concept, we can do a lot of different things – different from any Metal Gear up to this point. It allowed us to make a really cool, new type of action game.

What prompted the decision to bring Platinum Games in to work on Metal Gear Rising?

Korekado: When the decision was made to outsource the development of Rising and collaborate with someone, we really looked around at everything and we figured that since Rising is really focused on Japanese-style swordplay, we thought it would make the most sense for a Japanese company to do it. We looked at the landscape of developers in Japan; Platinum Games is the most qualified to make this type of action game and that's why we worked with them.

Is Rising intended to be the start of a trilogy/series or is it intended to be a standalone game?

Korekado: Of course whenever you are developing something, you always want the player to really love it and want more of it. If that happens, maybe there will be another game. But at this point, we are not really thinking ahead of time and saying, "We're going to make this a series." Instead we are just hoping that we make a fun game.

Are there any specific themes that are explored in Rising's story?

Korekado: As you know, the story up to know has always been written by Hideo Kojima and he has had very precise themes such as genes, memes, and scenes – these key words. This time, we are trying to take a step back from that. This is a different game – something not made by Mr. Kojima. So we are not assigning any key word to it. However, there are themes within the game that are writers put into it and once you finish playing the game you will be able to walk away with the message from the story.

Beyond story, what other fanservice is there in Rising that will bring in fans of past Metal Gear games?

Korekado: First off, we want to mention that the story takes place after Metal Gear Solid 4, after the fall of the Patirots and Sons of the Patriots is gone. So this [Rising] explains what happens to the world after that. Aside from the story, there are different types of mecha (robots) and technology that you've seen in past Metal Gears that make an appearance in Rising, it's just they're involved in different ways. Even though it's an action game, Metal Gear fans will be able to see a lot of familiar elements within the game and hope that they will get them.
In addition, although Raiden's main weapon is the high frequency blade, he does have secondary weapons he can use which includes firearms and various other types of weapons. Therefore, we hope that element will appeal to fans of past games in the series as well.

With swordplay getting a lot of emphasis, what is an overlooked or under sung feature in Rising?

Inaba: One thing we want to make clear is that there are various other weapons that you can play with, but the sword is really the core of the game. So we're pretty happy that messaging is clear since it is the core of the game and we want people to really enjoy fighting with this close range weapon.

Are there any characters from previous Metal Gear Solid games making an appearance in Rising?

Korekado: One thing we want to make clear is that an objective with Rising is really to be a self-contained story so that people who had not played Metal Gear up to this point can jump in and get up to speed really quickly and enjoy the game on its own merits rather than having to rely on knowledge from past Metal Gears. That said, there are characters from past titles in the series who will make an appearance and there are a lot of story references we brought back from older chapters in the series.

Will Rising feature a huge emphasis on story that previous Metal Gear games have had with long cutscenes and great story exposition?

Korekado: We do have to apologize if you like the long cutscenes since this time they are a little bit shorter because we are making an action game – we wanted to do something that wouldn't break the tempo of the action. But we do want to say that even thought the cutscenes are shorter, we are not sacrificing any story for that. What we're doing is we're just trying to tell a story in different ways; rather than tell the story through long cutscenes, we're trying to tell it as you play the game. So within the gameplay, we're trying to convey more as you play. Even though cutscenes are shorter, we're trying to scatter them throughout the game: short cutscenes very frequently so you get a feel for the story and absorb the story without breaking the tempo of the action.

Is there any stealth gameplay in Rising?

Inaba: Again we want to emphasize that this is not a stealth game; it is an action game and thus different from other Metal Gear games. There are ways to use certain stealth elements within the game. Even though you won't be sneaking through a stage, you can use stealth to sneak up on enemies and kill them quickly to perform stealth kills that give you an advantage in battle.

There are counter and parry mechanics in Rising. Will that play a heavy part in the combat gameplay as it has in the Batman Arkham games?

Inaba: The parry system will not be the central feature of the combat system. It's one thing you can do, but you will be able to push combat in many different ways. You can charge right in. You can be very aggressive. You don't always have to parry. You don't have to create openings. That doesn't mean you can't – it just means there are other ways to do that. Being able to parry is another option you're able to do and we want to have that option there to give the player the ability to counter enemy attacks.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance will be released in early 2012. Thank you to Atsushi Inaba and Yuji Korekado for speaking with me. Also, thanks to Kojima Production Associate Producer Sean Eyestone who acted as the interview interpreter and Konami for inviting me to their booth at E3.
