Dishonored
News: It sounds like Arkane Studios breathed a sigh of relief when BioShock Infinite was delayed, as Dishonored game designer Ricardo Bare has said it “was awesome news” for the studio.
veryone likes a bit of healthy competition. Unless, of course, you’re sensible and simply want to romp through the lands unopposed on your quest for global domination – or just global sales domination. Well, Arkane Studios, developers behind The Greatest Game Ever Made Even Though It’s Not Even Out Yet™, sound more than a little relieved that one of their biggest competitors, Irrational‘s BioShock Infinite, was pushed back into 2013, leaving Dishonored free to mop up the October audience.
“Oh yeah, that was awesome news,” said designer Ricardo Bare, when asked about BioShock’s delay in an interview with CVG. “We know a lot of the guys working on that game, and we wish them the best of luck, but the holiday season is super crowded, so any time one of the big guys drops out, it makes things a little easier for us.”
Obviously, if BioShock Infinite was only delayed to accommodate the release of Grand Theft Auto V, then Arkane won’t get such an easy ride, but that’s much less in Dishonored’s territory. In fact, all the games that would’ve represented threats to Dishonored have been delayed – Hitman: Absolution, too, won’t be coming until early 2013, meaning Arkane really do have a free ride.

Game News: Dishonored Offers “Non-Lethal Alternative” For Every Assassination Quest
Just hours after Deus Ex developer Warren Spector spoke out against the prevalence of ‘ultraviolence’ in today’s gaming landscape, the makers of forthcoming supernatural-action title Dishonored have revealed that every single assassination quest in their game can be completed through non-lethal means.
Backing up their claims that the FPS thriller will offer a near-unparalleled level of player choice, key staff at Arkane Studios have offered more detail to substantiate their intriguing suggestion that you can play through the game without killing a single enemy.
“The none-lethal stuff is not the focus of the game, but we definitely wanted to make sure we were supporting that avenue of player-choice,” explained Lead Technical Designer Ricardo Bare.
“Players can be super-sneaky guys who don’t kill anyone. And as a bonus layer for quests, with every single person you get sent to kill there’s a way to get rid of them forever without killing them.
“We thought it would be cool if you could do a bit of extra digging in a level to find some extra information, and discover a ‘poetic justice’ way to get rid of the guy.”
Level Designer Rich Wilson added that the player acquires a variety of skills that enable them to use brains rather than brawn to succeed.
“You have a lot of abilities like ‘possession’, ‘blink’ and ‘bend time’ which can get you out of situations really fast,” he said. “There are many opportunities to evade rather than destroy.”
More details on the development of Dishonored can be heard in the latest Bethesda podcast. The game is scheduled for release on PC, Xbox360 and PS3 in October.

“Play-style matters a lot. Very direct players will probably get through the game in 12 or 14 hours,” co-creative directors, Harvey Smith and Raphael Colantonio said in a Dishonored Q&A on the Bethesda Blog.
“Explorers who eavesdrop a lot will take twice as long.”
Arkane also detailed the use of mana – small amounts will regenerate, but players will need to use a potion called Piero’s Spiritual Remedy to refill after major spells – and said players will have access to the six major active powers and four passive enhancements.
“Plus there are 40 bone charms in the game that grant small supernatural perks. But no one can have all of these things in one playthrough,” the pair noted.

Dishonored PC won’t use a console UI
Although Arkane Studios has its share of passionate console gamers, its heart lies with the PC – which is why the PC release of Dishonored has its own user interface rather than sharing one with the control-pad friendly console versions.

“Our background is very PC for sure, and now in this game we have a mix of strong console players and fans, and also hardcore PC people,” Arkane boss Raphael Colantonio told PC Gamer.
“So both sides are very influential, and in the end, yes, the PC has its own different interface.”
Co-creator Harvey Smith said Arkane Studios has a strong culture of PC development and gaming, so much so that PC standards are almost a “religion” to the team.
It’s interesting to note that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, a Bethesda stablemate, was criticised for its console-centric user interface despite the franchise’s long association with PC gaming.
Dishonored is due on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in October.

Dishonored’s protagonist has no back-story
Dishonored creative director Raf Colantonio has told Penny Arcade that the assassination game’s protagonist, Corvo Atano, has no past.

Colantonio said Corvo’s back-story won’t be filled out because, according to the PA piece, “a past isn’t interesting for players”.
“The player himself has no true back-story,” said Colantonio. “He’s the bodyguard of the empress, and that’s all we reveal.”
You do, however, learn how Corvo gains his supernatural powers: they come from a character called the Outsider.
“He sort of has a cautionary tone,” co-creative director Harvey Smith added.
“He says how you use this is up to you, but note that there will be effects. It’s funny, when we first talked about the Outsider, people assumed he was the devil, egging you on to do greater and greater evil. Or he would judge you harshly if you did evil. But instead we have an amoral observer character.”
Dishonored’s story sees Corvo blamed for the death of the empress he’s supposed to protect. The game – which lasts about 12 hours – is a series of assassination missions developed by Arkane and Bethesda. It’s out in October this year.
