Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time Demo Impressions
It’s been 7 long years since Sly Cooper last roamed the consoles, making his debut on the PlayStation 2 in 2002. Sucker Punch, the studio behind the original Sly Cooper trilogy, moved on to Infamous, and found major success in that series. Everyone thought Sly Cooper was a done deal, but Sanzaru Games shocked us all with the reveal trailer of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time this past year. The Ratchet and Clank: HD Trilogy provided me with a code for the Thieves in Time demo, so I will give you my thoughts on the game, and tell you what I’d like to see.
The Thieves in Time demo was short, but sharply to the point. It is clear from the small 5-10 minutes of gameplay I was given, that this demo was all about showing off some of the changes Thieves in Time brings to the table. You play through a single mission in the game, that has you navigating the highrise portions of a giant circus tent. Right off the bat you will notice a new ability that fans of the series will not be familiar with. Pressing L2 causes you to switch Sly Cooper to a different outfit that yields him special abilities. The outfit is supposed to represent one of his ancestors that he presumably located in time and earned the ability from. At this point in the game you only have the power of one ancestor, but I assume you will gain access to more as the game progresses. It seems like an ample replacement for the ability upgrades from previous games, since Sly Cooper at this point is pretty much a master thief now. This isn’t Metroid either. I’d be pissed if Sly Cooper lost all his abilities from game to game.
The demo features the Robin Hood-like outfit which allows Sly to wield a bow and a flamboyantly stylish hat to go with it. You will spend the majority of the demo hopping around obstacles and using “Robin Hood” to shoot arrows at appropriate targets to progress. The game definitely feels up to par with this generation’s hardware. Controls are responsive, actions are fluid, and the visuals are much prettier than predecessors, including the Sly HD Collection. The conclusion of the demo introduces you to yet another ancestor of Sly Cooper, a circus-oriented raccoon named Galleth. Not much is known about this character, but it’s safe to assume he will have a valuable role to play later in the game, particularly gaining access to whatever special talent he has.
What would I like to see? Really, I just want to see more. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the plot, gameplay or mechanics. The general fundamentals of Sly Cooper remain, like jobs, coins, stealth-related obstacles, and Bentley venting his extreme paranoia on your HUD. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time is set to release in February 2013, and I think it’s safe to say fans and newcomers alike will be in for a real treat this time around. The demo should have been longer, but I think it was designed to be as minimalistic as possible. Alas, giving you a taste of something good sure does make you want more.
