Torchlight 2 console release not “currently” planned, says Runic
Torchlight 2 for consoles isn’t part of the plant at this time, according to Runic CEO Max Schaefer.

Speaking with IGN, Schaefer said Runic isn’t ruling out a console release in the future, but should the RPG release on consoles, it won’t be a “port like we did last time.”
“We’re not currently planning a console release. We haven’t ruled it out but to do a port like we did last time, would probably not be on the cards, because of the limitations of Xbox Live Arcade, and the fact that we would have to downsample all our artwork this time.
“With Torchlight we were able to do a direct port of pretty much all of the art assets, other than the interface that had to be redesigned. It would be a lot more work this time. It’s questionable whether a business case can be made for that.
“We enjoyed making Torchlight for Xbox Live, and we think it came out really good. It didn’t lose any money, certainly, it made money. But we can only do one thing at a time as a studio. We have to evaluate everything across the board and say, ‘What makes sense for us to do next?’
“Right now we want to take some time off and kinda clear our heads and come back with a clearer perspective on what the community wants us to do.”
Torchlight 2 is out on Thursday, September 20.
Torchlight 2 soundtrack available in full, for free
Torchlight 2′s entire soundtrack, “mixed and mastered specifically for your listening enjoyment, in professional CD-quality” is available entirely free for your downloading pleasure.
The anticipated action RPG sequel drops on September 20 for just $20, which Runic says is as “viable and profitable” as the usual triple-A pricetag. Check out its launch trailer, and pick up the original on the cheap in the latest Humble Bundle.

Diablo 3′s a “significant product,” but Torchlight 2 will offer more, says Schaefer
Diablo 3 is a “significant product,” from Blizzard, according to Runic CEO and former Blizzard man Max Schaefer, especially since it’s nearly “impossible” to meet the expectations of the Diablo community.

Speaking with IGN, Schaefer said while Diablo 3 is a good product, in comparison, Torchlight 2 will offer players offline single-player and more replayability.
“First of all, I think [Blizzard'a] geting a bad rap. Meeting the expectations of the Diablo community is going to be impossible,” said Schaefer. “No matter what they do, it’s been 10 years and the expectations have built up so much. They’re going to run into criticism.
“They’ve actually put out a significant product there. But what I think we’re offering something that some players may prefer [with Torchlight 2], things like the offline single-player play. Basically, we’re not trying to create a secure economy. We don’t have to have these crazy protection mechanisms in place. We’re giving our development tools out with the game so that the modding community can go crazy with it and make all kinds of cool new stuff.”
Schaefer said there will be more randomization of dungeons and character customization with Torchlight compared to Diablo 3 as well.
“Some of the criticism of Diablo III was about how there isn’t really a lot of differentiation between builds of a character, because they all unlock the same skills at the same time,” he said. “There’s less of an opportunity to make a character that’s truly individual for you. I think that could have the possibility of reducing longevity, because once you’ve played through it with a character, there’s no particular reason to go through and try a different build.
“I think that we also have, maybe, a longer game at this point. More randomization. A little bit more replayability. I think that Diablo III focused a little more on super-polished mechanics and balance and look and art direction. They’re on a Blizzard level. They’re seriously good. But it’s at the expense, a little bit, of the replayability.”

Torchlight 2 for Mac still a couple of months away

It was just last week that Runic Games officially released their highly anticipated Torchlight 2 RPG for Windows. Unfortunately for Mac OS gamers, if Torchlight 2 is a game you would love to play on your computer and don’t want to have to shell out money for Boot Camp and Windows, it looks like you will be in for a wait. According to Runic Games’ CEO, Max Schaefer (via Reddit), he revealed that the Mac OS version of Torchlight 2 is on the agenda of things to do, but unfortunately it is still a couple of months away from being completed at the very least. This is pretty disappointing news for Mac OS gamers who were hoping to get their hands on the game in a timely manner, but we guess better late than never, right? In the meantime, it seems that gamers who use the Linux platform have not been forgotten too and support for Linux will be added in the future. Until then, gamers on Windows who have forgotten about the release will be able to get their hands on it via Steam or on the Torchlight 2 website.
